elpeede, you got it spot on mate..the water does indeed get in via the window trim, runs down a 'runner' straight onto the lock mechanism.. the only way to sort this ,is to remove the lock assembly completely and dry it out and lubricate inside the lock and the cables . ... - .- -.

it appears the correct answer could be to rub a sheep over the latch mechanisim or buy some sheep water proofing in a pot http://www.flints.co.uk/acatalog/Marine_Lanoguard.html 2010 Disco XS TDV6, 2009 Freelander 2 GS

My drivers door cable also failed last Friday just as I was leaving for work, I've had to live with it for a week as I've been away in Warcop and Catterick - muchos bummer!!!

Nearly 5 years since this posting, but looks the most likely link to my problem. 2011 TDv8VSE rear o/s passenger door stopped working suddenly, cant open from outside or inside handles. Remote lock works fine, is this most likely cable snap?

Just had my 07 TDV8 drivers side go, same thing couldn't open it from the outside, no resistance on the handle.

great thread this! Had my external door cable go the other day so searched and found this thread: followed it to a tee and got everything off in 35 mins only to find when trying to put the new cable end into the slot that it won't go! so had to take the door locks off (great powerful Uk youtube vid BTW!) to see why not, only to find the old broken end of the wire is firmly and irrevocably seized in the hole! Have tried drilling it out to no avail.
