FYI before they start the rebuild did you see what I put on your gearbox thread? 😉

Yes Bud, an interesting read... but from what I can tell no one has actually done it.... and the Caddy STS GM 5L40E box is different to the BMW GM 5L40E Evil or Very Mad So I'd end up with the wrong gear ratios for a kick off...... Just going have std again, with a new, not recon, torque converter....and see how it goes... and then get shot of the bloody thing next September when the prices start to climb again Thumbs Up

Whistle And your sort of right about the vin number,BUT, they would only insure it to a local MOT centre and that was it, no further Evil or Very Mad Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

That would do wouldn't it?

There is a corvette ls7 mated to a 5l40 with uprated 5l50 parts though...
For the cost of an international call I'd call these guys and see if they could ship you a core or the info a local box maker could use as the ls7 power stats are into the land where you'd have a td6 tuned to the hilt!

Tried the 4.5 petrol Amazon and found it totally lacking in the power department when hitched up to a trailer Shocked

And the Colorado isn't man enough to start with..... it can't handle the weight, and isn't plated for it either Thumbs Up

It doesn't matter if an engine produces 1000 lbs ft of torque.... it's still no good for towing if that torque comes in at 4500 RPM, same with the BHP it could be off the scale.. but if it doesn't get there by 1500 rpm, it is of little use for towing.

That is why the HGV engines are such a pitiful output for their size..... less power (bhp) from a big engine means more torque at a lower speed..... and to get things moving you need torque, not power.....
To put it another way, the more power you have the faster you can go..... but the more torque you have the quicker you get to the top speed, and more importantly the easier it can move larger weights Thumbs Up Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Power is how fast you hit the fence
Torque is how far you drag it

A family friend of ours towed my TDV8 up on a flat bed to Craig's (central diff was locked up) was an early 2000's Isuzu with I think a straight 6 4.2l engine. He's holding onto it because it has no trouble towing his 3+ tonne diggers and it was before they started introducing electronics onto them. Ed

The most obvious choice to me is a Cummins. Plenty of kits to put them in various vehicles. Failing that a Perkins has also been done. Both are completely bullet proof.

I also know a chap with a Ford Cargo engine in his Series 3. That thing pulls like a train although it is extremely agricultural.

Or if you're feeling flush (Sh1 tty pun intended - twice !!) A Ford F650. Especially if she comes with it.

Whistle I couldn't possibly drive something like that.... I'd end up crashing cos I was looking in the mirror Laughing

All those American H/D pick-ups look the business, but I'd have a problem with emissions in London as they are classed as a commercial vehicle and would need to be Euro 5 or what ever this weeks standard is, and have a DPF. But I did think about a petrol version running on LPG.... trouble is when you get that big, even the gas loving Americans concede and go diesel Sad Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Yes and No Shocked Not the 4.2, but a have a pal who runs a 4.6 P38...... I can leave him standing, quite often in a cloud of steam Laughing The V8 petrol Rover engine doesn't produce enough torque and what it does produce comes in too high for it to help with the 'getting every thing rolling'...... If I was looking at a petrol engine it would be 7 litres +, not the half assed offerings that Rover offered. In it's time it was a reasonably good engine, but it wasn't much cop for pulling heavy loads, and didn't have the best reputation for keeping cool Whistle Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer...
