Not hear say, but straight from the horses mouth, it was the gearbox builder himself..... as I said I don't know if it applies to the Range Rover or another car with the 8 speed gearbox..... it's not like Range Rover are the only people to fit that 8 speed box in their car there must be 100's of different motors out there.... It isn't inconceivable that some bright spark has over done the torque and created a TD6 scenario Thumbs Up Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

We run a Classic for our off-roading charity runs in Kenya and a lot of the folks out there have replaced the std 3.5/3.9efi with a Lexus LS400 V8 1UZ engine. Apparently its a relatively easy job and it gives you bags of low end torque which is what I presume you need? The 1UZ is a 2WD but will run with the Landrover gearbox so you get 4WD - if I recall you need a motec thingybobby to get it to match.

Or there is the 2UZ engine which used to go on the older Toyota Amazons - again bullet proof and you get the 4Wd gearbox that comes with.

If you'd like, I can speak to the peeps back home and see if they have install pics/guides?

That's not a bad idea... but I thing that if I'm going to take the plunge then I'll stick to a diesel, as they will give more pulling power per litre than a petrol engine, and I really want to get back to basics and not have any ECU's Thumbs Up Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Crazy option but I know of someone who could build a WJ jeep with a 6bt engine in it and this no ecu's and towcap of 3.5tons. Nissan patrol axles or standard jeep units with air or lunchbox locker in for grip in wet bits and a fuel pump strong enough to take very nasty stuff for fuel so reduced fuel costs even more.

Or just go balls out and get a mog... FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Hmm. RRC engines. I first thought of the 300 tdi, but you'd already considered that.

I think Brazil made a 2.8 L 6 cal version of the tdi. I've seen one in an RRC and the owner was very pleased with it.

The other choice would be an American diesel. If you do that, get an RRC with a bad engine, or transmission, or both. Then just replace everything with the American one. Instead of worrying how different parts will work together, get the same engine, transmission, dffs and axels. Then it SHOULD all work together.

Big Cry Big Cry Well I thought that I'd found a solution to my ffrr woe's but the bloody insurance companies have screwed that up Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

I found a Santana PS10, listed as a Santanaps 10 Shocked all was going well until I tried to get some insurance..... the car was a UK car but spent last year in Bulgaria.... where it had to be re-registered... DVLA will make it UK again but require MOT...Fair enough.... the bloody insurance companies wont insure it with BG plates..... Censored Censored How do you get it to an MOT Banging Head Banging Head carry it? Anyway what looked like a fantastic cheap stop gap solution would need to be carted around on a trailer until registered on UK plates again.... as it was 180 miles from home, that sort of put a dampener on the whole thing Sad It was a 2.8 Iveco lump that can be nudged towards 150 bhp and 300 lbs ft, that would have just about coped, and at the price it was I wouldn't have cared if it all went pop in the autumn...... Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... You insure on the vin number, a good few companies do it.

The other way is trade plates.

You could then remove the Bulgarian ones and the car would be covered.

The MID I'm sure support entering of just a VIN, short term only as I think the max is a month. FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

I agree about the D2 td5, had 3, a much better drive than a d1, but the auto not the best gearbox for towing I found.
Manual one mapped by Mike for towing would be the way forward BUT you need one with a solid solid back end. 2007 Vogue TDV8 with 255/55/20's fitted

D2 rear springs is an easy conversion... but I'm back in the ECU territory again Sad It would appear that there are very few options open to me.... The only cars that produce enough grunt are all ECU and nearly all partial slip TCC autos, not manuals, which would allow me to use a lower gear....... And all the manuals are coupled to an engine that would struggle to pull the skin off a rice pudding Evil or Very Mad

As I have thought, what I need is a 4x4 with HGV strength in the drive line but not the size or weight, and it has to be a car or a crew cab... but a car is better... less red tape and aggro going in to London Whistle I'll just have to make one, a Range Daf, or should it be a Daf Rover..... maybe a Naff Rover Laughing I'd fling one in a Defender if the driving position wasn't so uncomfortable for me, 30 minutes and my back is killing me, and in the winter I'm freezing my nuts off as I have to open the window in order to turn the wheel Evil or Very Mad Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer...
