I'm coming back to the RR field after 8 months in a Disco 3. Just fancied a upgrade.

What mileage are TDV8s generally good for, due to my budget I'm looking at the higher end of the market with approx 160000-200000 miles. Is this alot? Do they give much bother?

Whilst I've not owned it long, just 7 months or so, I can say mine runs as sweet as anything. The interior is holding up to the miles, and it's ivory. I think mileage is around the 143,000. TDV8 seems to attract attention re turbos. but hey, these things could go at any time I suppose.

My advice, after struggling with a similar decision is to go for it, if it is only the miles holding you back and the rest of the car seems fine.

Northern Monkey, you can tell him that it's a tremendous car. All it's had is a drop link, or whatever they are called, the WD40 fix on the rear wiper, a few cans of BG diesel cleaner, a few tanks of super diesel and a load of polish.

I've got mine up to 108k now and its running smooth as a smooth thing that's been ironed (apparently cause I've never touched the iron at home)  09 TDV8 Westminster, Mariana Black, Rear seat entertainment, hatch bag and 2 slobbery mutts

Mines is now at 154k  Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue
Had- 2008 TDV8 Vogue SE in Java black
Had - 2007 S/C in Stornoway Grey

Mine has just ticked over 200,000 klms.

Its had two new turbos fitted when I bought it by a very good indie who spotted smoke!

Other than that seems okay.

Any of these posts helped but your mind at ease OP?

I have some questions..

1. Is it a case of when the turbos go rather than if ?
2. Why is their repair/ replacement so expensive ?
3. Whats the gear box situation with the TdV8 ? Is it as bad as the Td6 ?
4. Any known issues with the injectors ?

I think with age any part can go on any car, biggest issue I find is sticky turbo actuator but it's easily cured.
The turbo s about £800 and it's location adds to cost in labour, is hidden above nearside diff - offside is way easier and has less issues imo
never had a td6 or issues but someone wise will no doubt be along shortly

The TDV8s use the 6 Speed ZF autoboxes, think it's either the ZF6HP26 or the ZF6HP28, but either variant should be significantly better than the 5 Speed GM autobox, the 'infamous' GM5L40E, used in the TD6.
The only caveat I would suggest is to ensure the gearbox oil and filters have been changed, I think the TDV8 service manual mentions this should be done at around 75,000 miles, but don't quote me on that.

I took the plunge and purchased a high mileage TDV8. To be honest, I rather prefer high mileage because, this usually means alot of the common faults have been fixed.

It's a Vogue SE, I got it at what I think is good money. Potentially it has turbo issues, but it could be anything. It goes into limp mode every now and again, but once restarted works perfectly. Perhaps a turbo actuator, EGR Valve, split pipe. I really don't believe it actually is a turbo fault, however if it is I will cross that bridge then.

Won't have time to look at it properly for the next few weeks.

The turbo issue is expensive, because the advise is that you must change both at the same time.

I'm now at least, comfortable I'll not have this issue whilst I own this car, especially in remote locations!

Stick it on a diagnostic tool and you should get an idea what the issue is since going into limp mode will generate an error code.

limp home mode could be being caused by the rather notorious split turbo hose.

As you are looking under the bonnet of the car it tends to be the hose on the right which splits under the webbing at the back end of it, where it bends to go into the throttle body. 5 mins to change with a screwdriver or small spanner and can be replaced with silicone hoses for more durability, but TBH the originals are not a bad price and tend to last a good few years.
