Buy it now because if you're starting to think in a sensible way you will never upgrade. There's always a reason not to.
Depreciation, not sure what you are going to get, etc.,... Life's too short!
5.0L have already taken a big hit and yes they will depreciate a little more but if you can afford the petrol, what is a bit of depreciation. Besides when has buying any fullfat new or old been a sensible decision. There are many more sensible cars around if you think about it!
If you buy with a warranty from a dealer or a specialist, you are limiting the risk. You might find someone who will take yours in part-exchange. Shop around, there are deals to be done.

The 4.2 SC is an awesome car and so much for the money, but the 5.0 leaves the 4.2 standing still and is much smoother, feels more nimble and is just terrifically awe inspiring.

If you take a drive in one, you'll see what we all mean.

If it helps i worked out fuel costs on my assumed travel mileage. I used what i think is "worst case scenario" figures for MPG on what were my three engine options. If my maths is correct"ish" then the 5.0 was about £500 more costly

Fuel costs to be honest don't matter I do 26k a year and the 5.0l won't cost any more than the 4.2l
I tend to look on it that I get more value out of my vehicles than people who do low mileage I am also brilliant at man maths Whistle Whistle

Sandy, I am very very happy with my 5.0 but I have to say my 4.2 is not in "perfect" condition despite the amount of work done on it. So for me personally the extra cost of the 5.0 was more than worth it.

The difference between the 4.2 and 5.0 are substantial IMHO, however is it worth the cost to you and that is the most subjective term of all.

If you haven't already, please do yourself a favour and take a 5.0 out for a long test drive in varying conditions. Really take it out and do the open road, twisties, town trips etc. everything you would see in normal life and see if you feel that the differences are enough to justify it to you.

In hindsight I am even more happy with my choice, at the time I was looking at the cost difference as well and I am SOOOOO glad that I pushed the budget limit to get to the 5.0 I have now. I hope it will be the same to you.

Important is also, how long do you intend to keep it because the extra cost (taking depreciation etc. etc. into account) per year is then becoming less "painful" maybe, at least if you do proper man-math Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

I hope you join the 5.0 SC club but will understand if you do stay in the 4.2 club, because the SCs are just brilliant cars in both guises IMHO.

I have even been contemplating getting a cheaper 4.2 SC in the future as a pure off-roader, like one would do with a Defender, just because I think that a FFRR as off-roader would be a million times nicer than any other 4x4 Smile and a good 4.2 would do brilliantly and be quite cheap to run I guess. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

South Africa 2016 Range Rover SVAutobiography 5.0 SC V8 Baltic Blue

bought my 4.2SC in March 2014 - thus far done 27000kms (16875miles) excluding the 7000kms (4375miles) I did with the dealer's freelander whilst my car was with them. During this month we will most probably do another 6000kms (3750miles) going on holiday and business). So yes I also do quite a bit of mileage but it so comfortable and effortless in this car.

Also had a look at the 5.0SC. The reasons I would swop my 4.2SC for the 5.0SC are:

- power difference
- media connectivity (usb, iPod, bluetooth - music) that comes with the 5.0SC
- did i mention the power difference and the possibility of adding a bit more?
- the interior seems to be a nicer place than that of the 4.2SC, e.g. better (softer?) leather, quieter interior on the move, better sound system), better seat comfort

Not that the 4.SC is a bad car - far from it Mr. Green

will probably get one in a year's time as I've done the SC pulley, took the cat out and will do the remap within the next 2 weeks - just waiting for LR to sort out the misfire on the car.

The point is the 5.0 feels MUCH more luxurious and "Expensive" than the 4.2.

Well I said it! Whistle

The 5.0 has more than enough power. I can't see the point in adding more power.

Because it is not a sports car and because it is more than enough the L322's chassis can handle.
For having owned a 5.0 SC L322 I can tell you it's all OK and fun in a straight line but once you come to the twisty stuff it gets really unpleasant going fast as the bodywork leans more than it should and the power cuts off quite abruptly mid-bend if you go too fast.
L405 handles way better and the chassis copes much better with the power.
I like to drive swiftly but to drive flat out is not the car's intended purpose. A Cayenne or the new RR Sport will be better suited to a sporty driving style.
