4.2sc rangie - issues?

Hi guys,

Iam looking at trading in my 04 TD6 for either a TDV8 or 4.2 sc. The petrol appeals from a simplicity perspective but the diesel from a fuel perspective.

There seems to be quite a few people on these forums that have the 4.2 and i was interested in their reliability and issues i may encounter with that model (2007 or 2008)

Cheers, Brad

How do you go on fuel consumption?

Potential reliability issues with the 3.6 TDV8 swung me to buy a supercharged

Early days for the SC got 22.5 mpg on the long steady drive home, 15mpg in town, looking at (hopefully) @ 18-19mpg in my normal runs

The TDv8 is the most sensible choice. However, I am not convinced that they will go the distance given how complicated they are. If a turbo or two fail or fuel pumps die, these can cost some money.

In the end it is an odds game. Plenty seem to get 200k+ but plenty seem to get issues. If the petrol supercharged version is less likely to have issues, this may be the best.

Plus I imagine they are fun to drive!

I get 17.5 L/P 100k and less than 13 out of town . The funny thing is Australia is waking up to diesels just as Europe who led the whole diesel thing realise it wasn't such a good idea , you get good economy but the particulate pollution is pretty horrendous , as you say they are complicated and expensive hectors so if things go wrong it's going to hurt and if you do mainly short town journeys you kill them .
I think you know which way to jump because you are already considering it . Thumbs Up 2008 MY Supercharged

Had mine coming up for two years now and it's been utterly reliable. Not a single bong aside from the time a door was left open over night. Though the car started first time and charged the battery back fine.

The only thing it's cost excluding fuel, was a big service at the Main Stealers, amazingly only £350! I've had a TD6 and the AJV8 and this is the best by a fair way.

Mpg is around 15-16 around town and upto 22 on a run. I don't do many miles a year, so works out the best one for me.

The main thing for me is the fun and theatre they are to drive! Present* 2006 Santorini SC Vogue SE.
Gone* 2006 4.4 AJV8 Zermatt Vogue.
Gone* 2004 TD6 Bonatti Vogue.

mine has been ok in the 18 months of ownership.....i've had the usual preventative oil changes done on the gearbox, diffs , transfer box and engine..

around town my mpg is about 18, on a 80 mph run about 22 and if i stick to a steady 50 i get 34 mpg..

the 4.2 is totally adequate for my needs as i dont do many miles and its pokey enough to scare off boy racers.. ... - .- -.

My 4.2 SC wasn't the most reliable one but still a great car to drive !!

Specific problems :
- Solenoid issue causing the 3-4 shift fault, difficult to find out since the ZF 6HP26 is very reliable so not a lot of them suffer from this problem, the specialists/autotrans shops didn't know. With help of RRPhil we found the problem and helped a few other forum members. Just one solenoid so cost is low.
- The earlier SCs (and every other car in the world with this gearbox apparently) have two oil to coolant heat exchangers that can rupture internally causing ATF and coolant and Engine Oil and coolant to mix. Both failed on my car within a month from each other. Later I found out that our mechanics put pure water into the cooling system which severely aggravated the corrosion problem. I don't know when the better heat exchangers came in, my May 2005 built NAS definitely had them.
- Some cars the SC coolant pump is wired incorrectly causing a fault, easy to resolve though.
- The rear brake calipers seize up, it happens the other models as well but the SCs seem to suffer it a bit more. Cheap to fix but annoying.

Non SC specific :
- Both front airbags went after 8 years and can only have the OEM Delphi (better quality anyway) but that seems to be for all models.
- The AC on mine failed completely, possibly because of 2 years of complete inactivity.

The flip side is, the engine seems to be bullet proof and very strong as it is AJV8 based.

The 5.0 I have now is even better, nicer and has not given me any problems to date Smile MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

I have had mine for just over a year and have done 26k miles costs have been for drivers heated seat replacement auxiliary heater repair rear passenger door rubber new gearbox under warranty new discs and pads all round new battery new front ball joints - damaged in floods - new drop link rear suspension.
Sounds like a lot but 26k hard miles and cost about 5k in servicing and repairs. It now shows no faults what so ever and those costs are all main dealer so high. So I suppose the Aux heater and heated seat didn't need to be done but for me if it is there it has to work.
Would I recommend - absolutely great cars

United Kingdom 2008 Range Rover Autobiography 4.2 SC V8 Santorini Black

I've had mine for a month or two now and after a number of initial niggles that the dealer eventually sorted, I am enjoying the car a lot.

In no particular order my list of positives;

Quiet and comfy
Excellent driving position
Handles well for a beefy 4x4
Great noise when it starts. (aah, the inner 12 year old)
Great engine - effortless power for overtaking
Very good stereo
Averaging about 15 mpg

Negatives

Can't get my Blackberry to pair with the car - randomly pairs about 1 in 100 goes
No USB socket / SD card slot
No grab handles on A pillar like my old Landcruiser.
Swore I'd never have another black car - Censored to keep clean!

I do very few miles these days so I suspect I will keep this for a while, or at least until 2 year warranty is up.

Blackberrys do not pair very well on bluetooth at all in my experience, no good on automatic pairing, but ok if you manually pair it every time .......bit of a pain .........change your phone, I did The Sony works great!

Sorry meant to say paid 14500 for mine knowing the above needed doing its an 07 with new interior but came with a years LR warranty and full documentation -- every bill there was even one for detailing - and had had the phone and TV upgraded it was on 84k but had obviously been well looked after thats the key. I have owned a few Landrovers they are all the same skimp on servicing and the bite you HARD good luck
