The 5.0 SC Sport is the better one to have as it handles better in every way ...

Having owned a L322 5.0 SC and now a L405 with the same engine, I must say it is not really the gearbox that sets the two apart but the chassis (with Adaptive Dynamics) and the weight loss. Yes the gearbox is better but it is not like "waw that gearbox was really what the engine needed" if you understand what I mean!

As CSK I have had both and agree re. the chassis but I have to say I think the 8 speed box makes a big difference as well. It always seems to be in the right gear to do what you want whereas the 6 speed was a bit slow witted. I think this is a combination of the extra cogs and the way the software is programmed but it makes for a much sportier drive when you are moving swiftly but also has much smoother changes for when you are cruising. It also provides much more automatic engine braking resulting in less need to do manual downshifts.

Yes the 8 speed is better but if I were in the market for a L322 I wouldn't buy a Diesel because it has an 8 speed gearbox instead of the 5.0 because it has only 6 speeds. And no I wouldn't buy a Sport either because it handles better (remember the old Sport was essentially a Discovery chassis so no thank you, I prefer to have the real deal, like everyone else on this forum I suppose!).

Stan, Saxton's currently has a 4.2 on @ approx £25k and the AT ad headline says it's 09.

thats the only one i've seen for a very long time Ryan so they are pretty rare...

..and i agree with you that a decent 5.0 will cost approx £10k extra to change from a 4.2.. ... - .- -.

Im sorry but i disagree... I had the choice of 5.0 6 speed or 4.4 8 speed and as i only do 3 or 4k a year, fuel really does not matter so my decision was made on A, the much better 8sp gbox & B, re-sale value... Thumbs Up

My dealer made me a very good offer on my L322 5.0L so depreciation was limited and factored in when I bought the car initially.
The 5.0L is so much smoother than the Diesel that I'd choose petrol over Diesel any day, even if it would only have 5 gears!
A Diesel will never be able to match a petrol engine's refinement, no matter how many gears the gearbox has.
For me a Range Rover should have a V8 petrol engine.

Whether it be for fuel cost or resale value the decision to go diesel can only be a compromise. An 8 speed box cannot make up for the huge refinement and performance benefit of the petrol.

In summary, from this article.

Quote:
The supercharger is a Roots-type Twin Vortex Series, which, with an increased number of vanes (four instead of three) and with higher helix angle, is some 20% more efficient than that used on the outgoing 4.2-L engine, said [Malcolm] Sandford [Jaguar’s Chief Engineer-Engines]. The air intake has been redesigned, giving a more direct airflow path and reducing flow losses by some 30%. Overall, the new supercharger application uses less energy to produce 375 kW on the 5.0-L V8 than the previous engine used to produce 228 kW (306 hp).

Quote:
Cold-start fueling is reduced by up to 80%.

Quote:
The block is stiffer, yet 2kg lighter.

Quote:
Radiated sound from the cylinder block is reduced by some 4 dB compared to the previous engine, which means more than halved engine noise.

Quote:
The reverse flow cooling system and a large V-mounted heat exchanger also help achieve fast warm-up for oil (by about 30%) and the cabin heater (about 60%).

Quote:
Service intervals have been upped to 24,000 km (15,000 mi) and an electronic dipstick replaces the conventional type.

Quote:
Jaguar has paid particular attention to sound quality of the new gasoline engines with a semi-active valve exhaust muffler and an intake feedback tube. Sound engineers have worked to eliminate supercharger whine, although opinions are split about its appropriateness in a luxury sporting sedan. But Sandford has firm views: "I do not like supercharger whine. It is an inelegant result of poor machinery not doing what it should—so we have taken it out."

So there you go.
