landrover specialists.

Here goes guys i ring a land rover specialist local one, i ask him regarding an inspection 1

service, he said he will call me back.

Then i ask him about a gearbox oil change and a megaflush, and a software upgrade.

Well the answer shocked me.

"Yes we do oil changes and also add an additive, but the software upgrade on a gearbox never heard of them"

So i proceed to tell him about the forum and that i own a IID TOOL, his answer.

" I DONT TAKE ANY NOTICE OF FORUMS, IF THEY KNEW WHAT THEY WERE DOING THEY WOULD BE MECHANICS"

then i entered into a heated debate with him putting a point of view across to the wealth of information and technical know how that most of you possess, fell on deaf ears I'm afraid.

@salb name and shame! Sounds like someone is a little bent out of shape at the idea of an informed customer who pulled them on their lack of knowledge.. Never heard of updating a transmission ECU?!

If you don't want to name on the forum, PM me, I'm in Cheshire and want to make sure I never accidentally call them!!

I'm looking for a megaflush myself on my SC but don't fancy driving to Kent. (as lovely as it is there)

Just had a flush and oil change done by IAWA in Wellingbourough at 99k when they took the sump off they said the oil was like treacle. The gear changes cold are now much smoother

Ok, where to start...

I have looked into "mobile flushes" and want to share my findings...

I was alarmed to hear customers & forum members talking about "mega flushing the gearbox" so, when i checked 8 out of 8 companies whilst doing there "mega flush" DO NOT change the filter! ABSOLUTE MADNESS!!!! Or run through the proper routine to re-fill the system. Therefore leaving the system unto 1ltr short of fluid! (although most were 1/2ltr short)

two of these companies were premises based too!

I have been looking after an ageing D3 TDV6 for the past 4 years for a good mate... Purchased it with 190k slipping TC (rev counter bouncing 1000 revs on motorway) and changed his oil using the double flush method and added Dr Trannies and the box has been perfect for 4 years & 40k... Just done a second similar change a few weeks ago 40k on and a very happy mate... Thumbs Up

I only do oil changes at work and double if they are particularly bad!

Don't forget, unless you have got the fluid changed before 40k then the damage has already begun! imho

I've got to agree with Craig on that one, if you wait to do the oil change anywhere near the 75k recommendation, your screwed, the box will be FUBAR'd just wont have failed yet.
The garage that rebuilt my box has recommended that I change the oil and filter every 12k, because of the heavy towing that I do, however he does not believe in power flushing. The biggest cause of transmission failure is the filter, because it doesn't very well. Because the box is sealed for life, they have to put a coarser filter in, to stop it blocking at 40k, this then causes the finer particles to be recirculated, thus doing more damage and getting finer all the time.
The best way to do this, is to change the filter before it gets to the semi blocked stage and starts to pull the muck through, then by changing only the oil in the sump and the filter, you will have removed any particles before they get the chance to be recirculated. Yes you have to do it more often, but you will save on the power flush cost, what you gain in one hand the other takes away Sad
I personally recon that if you were to change the oil and filter every 24k, as per old fashioned boxes, you should be alright. Provided that you don't do heavy towing all the time. If you spend 50% of your driving coupled to a trailer over 2 tons, like me (normally 3.2 tons), then you've got to be looking at annual oil changes.
And before I'm chastised for not recommending power flushing, I've got ask how many of you power flush the engine? So why should a gearbox be different? Whistle Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

The gearbox is power flushed, as a drain and refill only gets 4-4.5 litres of oil out of the gearbox, which has a capacity of 11 litres. A double flush still only replaces 50%, due to the new oil mixing with the old...

You wouldn't drain 3 litres out of your engine when changing it,would you Whistle

No I would not, but I do not power flush it either, I just change whats in the sump and replace the filter. Which is all I'm going to be doing with the gearbox, but at 12k, nearer to what you'd do with the engine.
Put it another way, would you do 40k on the same engine oil?

Or to go further in to this, a filter set costs about £39, 20 litres of texaco oil can be had for £70, if you use 5 litres of oil every change, and do it every 24k, for total outlay of £226 you can get 96k out of the box. How much is your power flush going to cost? at 40k or a double flush at 75k?
From where I'm sitting, even at 12K intervals, I'll be saving, and keeping the box going longer. Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

We are talking about different gearboxes here Thumbs Up

I wouldn't power flush the 5 speed FM or ZF boxes either Whistle

I was talking about the 6 + 8 speed ZF box. The oil is a whole lot more expensive for that box, than the 5 speed. And the filter is cheaper too.
I am a sponsor on D3 and RRS forums, so mainly flush these cars (though have done a few FFRRs)
The sump is a whole lot more awkward to remove on the D3/RRS. Though having cut open an 80k mile filter, there was nothing wrong with it. No metallic particles at all

You need to flush it BEFORE the damage occurs. ZF recommend between 50-75k for normal driving, more frequent for regular towing Thumbs Up
