The transponder that activates the immobilizer on the pre-flip style keys are not powered, so your spare key should still disengage the steering lock.

For the spare key, with a new battery you probably have to do the re-pairing trick (BOTH keys to be done) that is described on the forum as well.

Back to the problem at hand then. It can be that your immobilizer module is not doing all it needs to do. It unlocks the steering but does not activate the starting circuit. However considering that it does work sometimes makes me think it is a relay or still a wiring/contact problem. If the immo module fails completely then it won't work at all (usually).

Check if there are any relays involved in the starting process and check them/replace them (relays are usually quite cheap).

If it was a wiring problem, would it still show 'immobiliser(ews)' fault code ?

the ews immobiliser error refers to the immobiliser itself , ews stands for Elektronische WegfahrSperre which means 'electronic immobiliser' in german....

i think it could be your key with a low battery cos consensus on the web is that immobilisers rarely go wrong... ... - .- -.

Can you have someone turn the key while you tap the starter motor/relay with a heavy piece of wood or rubber/wooden hammer ?? Just to make sure the relay or starter motor are not at fault. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

There's no power going to the starter solenoid cable when cranking..

Looking at the Workshop manual for the 2005 TD6, you may be right that the problem is in the immobilizer module

The immobilizer "allows" the starter relay to engage so I am assuming there is a switch of some sorts in the module that activates the starter relay.

When the immobilizer module is changed, you need to "tell" the electronics that it has happened, either using a Faultmate or T4 etc. Not sure what the "other" units can do (Hawkeye, IID etc.) in this respect. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
