The BM54 is below a removeable floor panel, plenty of room around it, all connectors are at the top

Here is a pic I have from my car, BM54 is just out of sight under the yellow arrow ;

Here is a screenshot from the RAVE manual ;

So I suppose the side with the multiplugs on, or the left side of the unit, when installed, would suit for connectors ?

So contrary to earlier posts this "upgrade" does not include a software fix to give Aux input on a RR BM54 tuner then Shocked

For what its worth if aux input is specifically required for a 2002-2005 BMW wired FFRR then I suggest buying a 2005+ BMW version of the BM54 tuner and then buy the BMW Aux input cable:

Swap the tuners and remove the three pins from the black 12 pin plug on the aux cable and slot them into the three vacant sockets on the existing looms black 12 pin plug and you are sorted Thumbs Up

Old FFRR BM54 tuner back on the bay of fleas and net cost should be no more than £150 Whistle

I did this about 5 years ago on my old 2003 FFRR and JonP should still be benefiting from it now - Job done Thumbs Up

Cheers Mark. Next to the radio plug would be a good spot then.

Just got yours, and working on it now.

Amp upgrade and firmware upgrade are 2 completely different things.

The firmware upgrade will just allow the AUX to be selectable from the front screen.

You will still need some type of hardware or wiring/multiplug mod to actually plug something into it.

So if Baris could do the firmware update, and add the RCA plugs, as he's looking at doing, you'll have all you need.

Alternatively, Baris could do the firmware, and you mod the wiring, as per details from SteveMFr.

Alternatively, as Ajay(UK) says, get a newer BMW BM54 and add the BMW wiring kit........

The choice, as they say, is yours.........

According to a mail I got from Baris, AUX will be enabled on the BM54 with the last and latest firmware.

[i]"Hi Mark,

Just a note, the AUX, means that you can add an external device, and the bm54 will pick it up.

Baris, in no way am I trying to be criticle of the services you provide I am just trying to clarify the situation regarding aux input. This feature is the missing "jewel in the crown" on a FFRR BM54 tuner and one that many RR owners would like. If you have a software/firmware upgrade that enables this feature for £40 then that is of great service to the forum and one which should be actively promoted. Thumbs Up

If however the aux input feature is not part of the portfolio of services you offer then that should be made clear because at present I don't think Mark knows whether he will be getting this feature or not Confused Or am I misreading the whole thread Embarassed

Hi Andy,

I'm expecting to get the power amplifier IC section upgraded to increase power output and improve the sound quality, which will be the only hardware changes to my unit.

I am having the firmware upgraded, which amongst other things, should allow the unit to have the AUX option on the radio screen. It is the last one BMW had in these units.

If I want to actually use the AUX in function, I would need to have a further hardware mod to have RCA's fitted or rewire some multiplugs.......

It looks as though Baris may look at doing the RCA input plug hardware mod at some point in the future, to match the firmware upgrade.

Thats it, as I understand it. Apologies if I've not explained it very well.

In one of my first posts, I think I mentioned RCA inputs, when I probably should have said "if you want to be able to use RCA input sockets" I was just talking about firmware.

I could probably have worded it better.

Cheers

ok , i think its safe to say the service baris does is, he replaces the amps in the unit, he also upgrades the firmware that will give you the aux input option only the hard ware is not in the unit as standard, yes it is in the bmw version of the same unit as when they done it for landrover it was the minus this.
now i think, well i hope as i want his option, baris can do a hardware conversion that will give you a aux input in the way of a pair of rca's .

can you confirm this baris V8 facelift Range Rover Autobiography 22" wheels.

Yes Dave, that is pretty much what you get when you upgrade the firmware.

I did a test yesterday, did a prototype of the loom for the RCA AUX input. And it definately does work. Just a note though, unless something is plugged in to the AUX input, AUX will NOT come up on the screen when you press Mode.

However, there isnt enough room for 4 RCA outs and another 2 RCAs for AUX. So I might just convert straight into a Aux female socket. Which will be cheaper to buy a cable for afterwards.

Here is some more info regarding the Dynamic Routing (thanks to ccfj1)

Without Dynamic routing.
Normally, if TMC is enabled and you have a TMC disc in the nav drive (TMC= Green), then TMC signals are passed to the nav unit (via Classic radio), to the TMC message menu.

You get icons on screen for when you hit traffic problems on the road you are on, if you are being routed (via the nav), then you will get a message asking if you want to be rerouted as there is a something blocking the road ahead.

But you need to access the TMC info menu to see what the actual problem is.

With Dynamic Routing.
Same as above, but it will also display (and voice message) problems when not being routed as it "knows" what road you are on and where the hold ups are, and it will also offer alternate routes on screen.

No need to access the TMC info menu to see what the actual problem is any more either as its done dynamically to screen.

Rolling with laughter A special price for forum users, now I've had mine done. Excellent. Rolling with laughter

Seriously,

Got my unit back at 12:15 today, and I've been out and about this afternoon, listening to tracks and fiddling with the DSP.

The sound is clearer, crisper and cleaner, if that makes any sense.

I've spent nearly £10k from 1997 to 2000 on a tri-aktiv LINN Hi-Fi in the house, so can become a little critical of stuff if I put a mind to it. Eeeee when you didn't have a mortgage..!!

The sound is much better, the amp seems to have more dynamic range. There is definately more treble and bass. You can hear instruments, mainly on the mid to high end, that were not there before.

It's worth the £120 to me, as I like my music and keep my cars around 5 years.

I'm now wondering if the speakers from the facelift 2005 model will be a straight swap, and if they will be any better ? as I've a feeling they are rated for more power anyway.

That will have to be another project. Not heard one of those yet.

I tend to listen to a wide range of music, from Adele, to AC/DC and Nickelback, but sometimes The Eagles and some Pink, so have an extensive ear.

As on the review on the M3 forum, its not performed a miracle, but in the first few hours, it seems more like the sound I would have expected from a vehicle such as this.

I'm a happy man.

If you like your music, and don't want to rip out the standard stuff, its a no-brainer.......

Right, the prices are as follows for forum members.

£100 for amp upgrade.
£40 for firmware upgrade.
£50 for AUX out

+ £6 (signed) or £9 (special) postage.

As soon as I have got the AUX in sorted out, and the parts in stock, then I will work out a price for you guys.

For faulty units, you have 3 types of faults.

1-Amp failure, 1 or more speakers stop working
2-Loud squeal, or distorting caused by a faulty chip
3-No power to the head unit This one is a bit iffy, as there are more than 1 reason why it isnt producing power.

Repairs are £100 + postage (as above). If you have faults 2 or 3, then I can do the amp upgrade for half price. Bonus if you have amp failure, as you get the amp upgrade to fix the fault anyway Thumbs Up

I have noticed however, the bm54s do not suffer with faults in the RR as they do in the X5s. Probably because of the simple reason that BMW placed the BM54s in the most stupidest spot possible, next to the battery under the spare wheel! This overheats the amps, and causes them to fail. Well that is my assumption anyway.

Hope that clears everything up for you all. You can contact me via PM, email (xkalibar@gmail.com) or by phone, which Mark wrote on page 1.
