I'm in Wrotham so just the other side of West Malling on the A20 or M20 - 15 mins or so!

As to a battery, don't mess about, go for a 110 Ah, 920 CCA one from Euro Car Parts, nearest store is on the Medway City Industrial Estate:

If you buy a battery, and it makes no difference to any of these other faults, at least you'll have eliminated it as a possible cause. However batteries do always fail at around 5 years, and the first symptoms are always error codes relating to engine, gearbox and suspension.

It's incredibly uncommon in a Range Rover for it to get to the stage where it struggles to start the car, you always get electrical gremlins first.

Anyway, be interesting to see how you get on! Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining!

Changing a Battery

Are there any issues with disconnecting and installing a new battery. I have read some write ups that claim the RR locks up and you then need codes to make it all work again, is this true? Could it be as simple as take old battery out and put new battery in then all is ready to fire up again.

One listing says you have to use jumper cables to make sure you dont break the power connection to the RR? seems a little extreme but I am learning that the RR is a unique beast Steve B

Just take the old battery out, leave for 20 minutes then fit new battery. Turn steering wheel from full lock one way to the other, that will reset the suspension and steering sensors. Do a search for other topics on battery disconnection, that should give you peace of mind. Smile No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

Allways remove neg lead first as there is a pyrotechnic charge fitted to pos terminal

Agreed.

Only other tip is that when you reconnect the battery, dont treat the terminal gingerly.

Dont offer up the cable lightly to the terminal. Single solid movement to make it touch hard and complete the connection and hold it there whilst you wiggle it down onto the connector.

If you do it lightly, then its possible to have multiple touches and sparks as the connection gets closed. This can half wake up ECU's then switch them off again ... causing them to throw wobblers ( which normally clear if you disconnect the battery for a short time again ).

Doesn't always happen, but its has on occassions, and its been when I've been too timid with touching the terminal. V8 or else ...

Right one massive Bosch battery purchased, so tomorrows job will be fitting it. I am sure my RR is listening however as when I pulled up at some lights half mile from home, it went to ideal then cut out, then when I went to turn over it fired then the engine fault warning come on again. Turn off and restart, all cleared again. Now a battery would not make the car cut out at ideal, or would it.

Battery is low by the way. Thank you for the diagnostic tool this morning Ivor, massive help thanks. It showed a battery standing voltage of 11.6v, with charging voltage of 14.4v. So battery is low as so many have predicted, however the cutting out at ideal has got to be the injection pump as the fault codes might be saying.

Oh well, battery will be fitted tomorrow and I will see how this pump / ideal stability/ cutting out / engine fault problem fairs Steve B

Thanks. Bonnet locked up, neg off first, wait 10 mins, then pos off, old battery out, clean up and make room for massive Bosch, fit new as far right, to outside as I can to make room for pos fitting, pos on first with pressive no faffing about, then neg on with pressure. Fire the RR up, turn full lock left, full lock right and all should be ok

How does that sound? Fingers crossed Steve B

From experience the big batteries just fit, no slack or space left or right. You will also look at the hole it has to go into and then look at the battery and have doubts, but it will go.

Unless you are quite tall with muscles, use a small platform (not a plastic bucket!) to give yourself a bit more height and leverage when removing and fitting the battery. .

And Joe, I got the size covered 6'4" and a lump so lifting no problems....I hope Embarassed

Just hope the manic battery works and yes it looks way TOO big to go in but a few f's later I'll make it fit. That or it'll go in the boot with some long leads through the cabin Laughing Steve B
