I just contacted RCV for this and they advised against changing the oil unless the gearbox has issues. I am undecided now....

Definitely don't use them then!

Generally speaking, the quality of the transmissions and fluid produced by ZF and Mercedes are extremely high, that they could even go 150,000+ miles before requiring a service. Land Rover claim on the L322 that the 8 speed ZF box is "sealed for life" - interesting to see that isn't printed for the L405.

However, transmission servicing is relatively inexpensive and like engine servicing, key to a long life of the transmission. Everyone has their preferences, however every 75k / 10 years whichever comes sooner should be ample on a ZF transmission. Personally, I just do the change at 100,000. It is a messy job but can be done in 2-3 hours at home.

Other automatics such as Fords and DSG boxes need their transmission servicing done like clockwork every 2-3 years/40,000 miles, as dirty and degraded fluid causes clunky changes.

Mannol AG60 is a great fluid to use, but if you keep your eye out online, you can often get the full genuine ZF service kit for sub-£200. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

I did my 322 at about 50k I’ve been a bit lax with the 405 and it’s deffo due for a change. I’ve priced up a ZF pan/filter and oil from AUTODOC, and it’s sitting in my basket having been discounted to £190 for the pan and 8L of ZF fluid.

If I don’t find a new car shortly then I will get it in the garage and give it a go. I seem to remember the L322 was pretty easy to do and I’ve got all the kit this time around. And a diagnostic tool to read the temp.

On the other hand, when I had my 3.6 done LR charged me 1hr to do it if I provided the materials, but that was back when they were hunters…… There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
