United Kingdom 2004 Range Rover Vogue Td6 Java Black
TD6 starting

Twice now my TD6 has failed to start, both time's it started after being left for a while.

Turning over ok so battery seems fine, just dont fire up. I'm leaning towards fuel pumps but what one? how to test? can hear one\both prime when down by the tank and i turn the ignition on.

Dont want the missis and kids stranded.

Any other ideas or advice before i trade this POS in. 2004 black Vogue TD6

Hi mate - not had any experience with the fuel system on this vehicle (except paying through the nose to keep it drinking!)... are you sure you're barking up the right tree thinking of fuel pumps? If they were going pete tong generally, you may:

-hear cavitation from the pump (or racing? depending on pump type)
-suffer power loss (engine may strart/idle fine but lose power when more fuel is required under load)

What is the flow rate of the pump? I presume this is quoted somewhere so you can check.

Also, are you suffering from an interrupted electrical feed to the pump? Is there an error/fault code?

Sorry I can't be much more help, but as above I have had very little go wrong with mine.

same as dan, my td6 starts every time ..the only problem members have had is a flat battery but then the thing will struggle to turn over and maybe not at at all...how old is the battery btw, 3 years 'ish is about tops generally.. ... - .- -.

dan, can you explain "cavitation", i can hear the pump\s prime. mabe sounds a little noisy but no knocking etc. Might be barking up wrong tree but i have no other clues, no fault codes\messages, driving fine when started. i cant even get it to reacure, but it's done it twice in a week so i know it will do it again.

scarey, yes new battery 8 months ago, she seems to be turning over strongly. Even watched tele yesterday while waiting for the range rover to decide to start.... Laughing

47p2, yes, the secondary pump has come up a few times when searching for info, might be worth shot gunning this part. 2004 black Vogue TD6

Right, took it round the block a few times then back to drive to try start it. Then it done it, decided not to start.

Got under and listened for pump, very faint hum i assume from the secondary pump. i then bashed the tank a few times and heard the noiser pump cut in. She then started.

So looks like the main pump in the tank, loose conection or on way out, but at 80k ill think i just replace Looked on Rave and does not mention taking rear seat out but i know i have read that somewhere. Anymore information by someone who has done this job would be appreciated. 2004 black Vogue TD6

Probably an idea to check connections... potentially an easy fix there. I'd be gutted if I'd changed a pump complete when there was just a loose connection/damaged cable that could be repaired.

How much fuel is in? Pump works harder on a lower tank. If its low then this may support a worn pump theory. 2010 Disco XS TDV6, 2009 Freelander 2 GS

It failed to start again so had another look, and im glad i did as its the secondary pump not cutting in, not the main pump. Its under a hatch attached to the tank and this time i just rocked this pump alone and it started spinning. Connections look fine so new one on order.

Sorry couple more questions

Am i correct in assuming i can just remove this pump with ignition off? i know its a high pressure system. Ill prob clamp the hoses each side just to be safe. This pump also looks to have ear hose clips, nothing special but ill have to break them off, once again with regards to being a high pressue system reckon normal jubilee clips will suffice?

thinking about the above, the fuel filter's on the same system so cant be any different to changing that.

Rave is very vague on this for the TD6, the whole system is based on the petrol v8... Confused 2004 black Vogue TD6

Anything before the FIP is generally low pressure so you should be just fine in the case of a fuel lift pump.
