2011 Range Rover Vogue SE TDV8 Baltic Blue

David,
I am in awe of the amount of work you have done,…amazing.
I bet you didn’t work that hard at BT . What did you do ? M.T.?
Finally, sorry but I am not a fan of powder coating. It looks good at first, but one stone chip and it corrodes from behind it..

2012 Range Rover Autobiography TDV8 Baltic Blue

Think you've got me mistaken, Mike I've never worked for BT.

I've been trying to figure out what to do with the subframe. I'm going to have it media blasted but am unsure on how to finish it. Powder coating is appealing as it'll come back finished an ready to be built back up but like you say is easily chipped.

I've toyed with the idea of galvanising it but don't want it to distort or have the hollow sections fill with zinc.

I then wondered about Galvafroid paint as suggested but that takes my time when it comes back as would painting it with something like POR-15.

Excellent job you are doing though, I envy your calipers.

Thanks Mike, the calipers were actually pretty easy to do I rubbed then down with these on the end of a Snap On Polish & Prep tool.

However, yours being the 6 pot brakes would have "Range Rover" written on the calipers other then Brembo like the 4 pots.

I think I've decided I'm going to have this shot blasted and galvanised this week.

It's a solid chunk of metal so am hoping it won't distort or I'll be looking for another subframe

At least galvanising it will do the insides and the outside.

Was thinking about the subframe bushes today as they’re huge and are an incredibly tight fit into the subframe. After a big of Googling it turns out they’re the same bushes as in the rear subframe on the BMW X5.

Googling X5 subframe tools brings up this video:

Looking up X5 Subframe Bush Tools on eBay turned up this kit:

I was going to make something to do it but for the sake of £60 it’s hardly worth the hassle so I’ve ordered that kit.

Besides… shiny new tools are always fun!

What’s interesting is when Googling L322 Subframe Bushes there’s not much on the internet.

Changed my mind again… Several reasons for doing so…

1. There’s a chance that the subframe could distort when being dipped as the temperatures reach 450C when galvanising.

2. The drain holes already in the subframe might not be sufficient and I don’t want more holes drilling in it.

3. The bushes would need to be removed before galvanising and it could change the internal diameter of the holes where the bushes are which would mean tidying them up and that takes time.

So… today I bundled all of the bits into the back of the P38 and took them for media blasting.

They’ll be returned to me on Thursday and at that point they’ll be coated with Bilt Hamber Epoxy Mastic which I’ve been told is a great, hard wearing, durable finish.

I’ve left the old bushes in as it means the holes won’t be affected by the blasting so the bushes should remain a nice tight fit into the subframe.

Today I confirmed my suspicions though… you cannot live with only one Range Rover… You need a 2nd to ferry parts of the first around when it’s broken/in bits… 😂 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

Been a busy evening tonight…

Managed to get the bits back from shot blasting earlier

When I got back from there, DPD had delivered my order from Bilt Hamber.

I then unloaded the boot of the car into the workshop. Really quite pleased with how these things came out!

Tonight’s been spent in the workshop.

I stripped one of the rear hubs, removing the 2 bushes and then the bearing.

After I’d done the bits I enjoyed doing I settled into doing the bit I hate doing… Painting…

The chosen paint for the subframe and the 4 wishbones was Bilt Hamber Epoxy Mastic. I mixed the first tin using a bit of twisted welding rod in the drill and then added the hardener to the tin whilst continuing to mix with the drill.

I’ve done the 4 rear wishbones too but forgot to get pictures of them.

I left the old bushes in so the new ones didn’t get covered in paint and the paint didn’t affect the diameter of the holes they‘re pressed in to.

We’re away this weekend but I’m off work next week so will remove and replace all the bushes and touch up the paint with the extra tin of epoxy I’ve got afterwards. 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

Managed to get a few more jobs done today.

The tool I bought for removing the subframe bushes is useless, in fact it’s worse then useless. It didn’t even remove one of them before the threads gave up.

Most pullers, presses, etc. usually have an ACME or square thread on them but this was a conventional pitched thread that didn’t do any more then get the first bush to move. This damage happened with a 24mm ring spanner on it too!

Anyway, all wasn’t lost as we used the mandrel and socket that came with the kit along with some improvisation in the press to remove it. Balancing the subframe in the press was nigh on impossisble so we sat it on the transmission jack and pressed them all out.

After I’d removed the bushes I looked at the kit that came with the tool to install the new ones and wasn’t happy with them as they’d crush the bush before it was seated properly so instead of using them I started to make one that would fit it properly. I’ll finish that tomorrow and get them all refitted.

I did however get both bushes and the bearing changed in both rear hubs so they’re ready to refit now

Fitted shiny new back plates too as the others were getting a tad ropey.

David, looking at your front brake callipers... Do you have own any Paint Protection Film? Cut a piece to fit the front panel of your caliper where you have fitted the BREMBO decal and voila your decal will never peel

Yes, very easy... Spray bottle with clean water, soak the area, apply and squeegy out...
