Six point version of the special tool arrived this afternoon (outstanding price/delivery speed to France etc from an online auctioneer in uk). Took five mins to bed-in the sensor ( I did this "just so" - really didn't want to over-tighten it). GGDR is spot-on about being careful not to cross-thread it, so I had spent a couple of hours yesterday getting the sensor carefully offered-in etc... I'd pay close attention to getting this right.

Another two hours(!) to get the heat shield bent back into place and the two securing screws back in.. the one under the sensor is a pig.

Fired-up, IID tool on, check codes - showing: PCM-Engine TDV8 4.4L P040D-00 (2F) Exhaust gas recirculation temperature sensor A - circuit high.

Cleared codes. Checked codes. Fault code gone! Checked around sensor for any signs of blowing/smoke etc.. all good... test drive good.

Evening all - just going back to Corsica's question a couple of posts ago... what would be the effect of cutting the sensor and then driving the vehicle with the sensor cable severed? My guess is that this is effectively just going open circuit so could be tested by simply disconnecting the sensor at the harness connection to see what the effect is (eg putting the vehicle into limp mode etc..). I'm afraid I didn't check this whilst doing my repair so don't know the answer for certain... does anyone happen to know?

I think the basis for understanding this is whether cutting the cable could make things "worse", particularly given how hard the sensor might be to remove from the manifold.

Any steer on this might be useful - am I correct in assuming that simply undoing the connector would be an effective cutting of the wires as a test?

Yes well you could just undo the connector for a test. It won't go into limp, it will be the same as a failed sensor and the error will continue to show. So not too much point.

Another member - I think he had a 405 - tested his new sensor before he started all the work, plugging in the sensor (but uninstalled in the manifold) removed the error code.

So that is a better test than a disconnect, at least you will know it will clear the code before all that work.

But there's no fudge for long term - if that what you are thinking Corsica. Cheers, Greg

Hi All

Just done this job.

Thank you very much for the write up.

Followed the Instructions and it all went well.

A few extra things to add from my experiences.

This is what I used to apply WD40 it is a USB camera on a bit of bent wire and a small pipe to feed in the oil.

The camera was not much use but the light on the end let me see where to aim.




One way to prove that the sensor is at fault is to measure the resistance of it, mine was open circuit.

Just to confirm that the error would clear before I paid for a new sensor I tested it with a resistor in the connector.
With the ignition on you can clear the error with your IID Tool and it should not come back.

The resistor can be anything from 200 ohms to probably a few thousand ohms. The new sensor was 200 ohms at room temperature.

Do not start the engine with the resistor in place, who knows what it will do with a false reading.




I cut the old sensor off using a small cutting disk on a flexible extension you have to be very careful not to cut the metal pipe that is close to the sensor.







I then used a ½” long socket which is slightly smaller than 13mm giving a snug fit, just gently tapped it on with a small hammer.

Probably did not need such a good fit as it came undone quite easily, but not worth the risk of rounding it.








The heatshield bolts are stainless so you should get them out ok.

When putting them back in I tied some thin thread to the bolt to retrieve them when dropped and just pulled the thread off when the bolt was started. They are stainless so you cannot use a magnet to get them back!

I made a long extension to get the bottom heatshield bolt.

I have this fault EGR sensor fault (along with a red Restricted Performance dash warning) and whether or not the Restricted Performance warning is related to the fault code or not, I'm concerned that driving the car could have a negative effect on the DPF? Is that a risk? My soot levels are at 20.1g (not sure at what point it will do a regen)

That's why I changed the sensor - to find out if that was helping to fill my DPF.

Alas not, I've had no change to what I call regen range - that is my range from 0 or low grams soot to 20g soot.

The original post is 18 months old, I think if you could be bothered reading all 18 pages after that (!) it's mentioned in there somewhere. Will amend the OP.

Your main issue is you can't regen on a RED warning, you need to clear that red.
