4.4TDV8 - Oil leak from front / low / right side of engine

Hi Team,

My 4.4TDV8 is using a little bit of oil (just topped up 500ml two weeks ago) and, having done the classic o-ring fix at the back, I have been poking around for any other oil leak.

I'm fairly sure my oil cooler is ok (dealer replaced if before I owned the car) - and I can't see those pooling signs around the housing like Nino posted recently.

So I was poking around elsewhere and - looking down through the drive belts at the front right of the engine, I can see a 'wet' pipe. I tried to take a picture attached but it's hard to capture. I also drew arrows on the diagram to show which way and where the camera is pointing. The pipe in question is just below the AC compressor.

I spent a bit of time going through the PDF Workshop manual but I just can't see that pipe on any diagrams - so I don't know what it is, or what it connects to.

You can compare it to the two pipes bottom left in the picture - these look like AC pipes and are bone dry just a visual comparison that shows there's a bit of oil on the one marks which I think is a culprit.

I think NorthernMonkeyJones had an o-ring problem on the oil removal pipe?

I've not gone under the car yet - weather and protection plates putting me off a bit.

Thanks,
Greg

Greg,

I think your next step will have to be removing the plastic under trays to get a better view from under the front end and see just how much oil they are holding.

It could just be a loose coupling on the oil drain pipe if someone has had it off to drain the oil ??

Thanks Mike.

Looking at the diagram in your reply, I'm struggling to orient where that oil suction pipe is though? Is it on the left or right side?

Assuming right if that diagram is looking front to back. But it seems much further back than the one in my picture.

. Cheers, Greg

Does this picture help?

I have removed the plastic under trays once (last year) to spray lithium grease on my CSOV to stop it sticking.
It is an easy job, just lots of little 8 mm screws.

Hmmm yes I saw that in the WM but it doesn't seem to show the pipe. Nor the oil suction pipe (or at least I can't spot it).

Greg,
The pipe you have circled is not an oil pipe, but the vacuum pipe for the change over valve operation.
I am not aware of any oil pipes anywhere near there.

Any oil leak further back under the engine is likely to track along the plastic underguards then drip .
I think you will have to remove them and clean them then re-check to find your leak.

Mike.

Greg, i had leak in front and after long search located the culprit, it was plug on the top of the oil pump. What I did was to loosen the plug as far as will go apply some silicon and tigtend, problem solved. If not there, leak may be from steering pipe/connection.

pic. of plug.

Thanks guys.

Mike yes I'll have to get in there.

I think the reason that pipe isn't showing on the Engine diagrams in the WM is because it's an ancillary pipe. Maybe a power steering line.

So it might be that - or something leaking onto it. I'll need to get in there properly.

Nino that is a great tip - and in the same vicinity too. Thank you for the photos, nice light you rigged up down there!

The oil suction pipe is on the left near / just below the oil filling lid I think? So I don't think it's anything to do with that, the area i'm looking at is right hand side.

It might be me but I struggle to orient myself when I'm looking at those grey 3D images in the WM. For instance the top one here is easy to orient, but the lower one they've rotated the camera view so I'm lost already! And that's me just trying to find the suction pipe! Rolling Eyes I'm pretty good technically, I just find the WM pretty iffy.

Problem with front of engine leak is that when the fan is blowing it moves oil all over the place.

A bit of progress with my on-going oil leak search, was under the car at the weekend and found this pipe to be quite wet, at least at the bottom bend.

It got me thinking, looking at the diagram - that there is a union and plate and it looks a lot like the typical o-rings pipe at the top rear and I am wondering if the o-rings there are the same and leaking.

Has anyone ever had a leak here before?

. Cheers, Greg

yes that's right Stan,

Can you tell from this photo if it's been done?

Bottom of my pipe is quite wet.

. Cheers, Greg

if there is only 1 pipe for the turbo drain then the updated drain has not been fitted because it has 2 pipes going to different spots on the sump.
