2010 Heated/Cooled Seat not working

Hello everyone!

Long time lurker (I'm usually over on Defender2 or Disco3).

Done a bit of a search and read a few threads, but nothing comes up for the facelifted L322's.

I've got a Vogue SE with the heated and cooled seats. Problem is, the drivers side one doesn't work. The switch illuminates and I can feel the motor come on for a few moments, but then the motor cuts out (switch stays illuminated).

I plugged a code reader in and got the following fault 'B1231 - Right Seat'.

The underside of the seat is completely different to pre 2010 cars it seems, so not really sure where to start.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks.

We have only had one report of a 2010/2012 heated/cooled driver seat failure.
It was by Zeppfish. You could try sending him a PM to see if he can offer any help/ advice.

Cheers

Maybe start with the basics:

Try cleaning or replacing the filter. Might be clogged then it's shutting down to protect the motor.

It's a round disc - not sure if it's washable (only one way to find out right?). Comes off with a quarter turn.

You might be lucky.

Will follow with interest as my drivers seat also doesn't heat, just assumed my fat arse was too heavy.

If you find any solutions please update the thread.

As quoted mine failed with the same symptoms it turns out the unit uses a bit if electrical magic through a device called a peltier cell. In layman's terms if current travels through it one way, it gets hot, and if current travels the other way it gets cold!

JLR in their wisdom put a thermistor on the hot side of the unit, to stop a burned arse / seat, but no temperature control on the cold side. Sooo if its running cold but not hot, its the thermistor that is failing. If it does not run either hot or cold then it is probably something else with the fan unit being the first thing to check!

The other thing to note is that each seat has 2 units, one for the back, and one for the base! there is only a thermistor in the back unit, as this is the unit that runs all the time the heating / cooling is on!

Firstly run the seat cold, and see if it works indefinitely! if it does switch it over to hot. If it runs for a few seconds, and then the fan cuts out it is the thermistor i"m afraid and thats a new unit (the thermistor is bonded to the heating surface of the peltier cell)

My indie changed it out for a new one, and it now works fine! 2006 RR sport HSE

Wow , technology 👍👍👍

To think, I remember my dad repairing a puncture in the inflatable inner tube in the seat cushion of an old Wolsey he used to have.

mine failed also, I removed it and found one of the solder joints failed on 12v feed from moisture it looks, just retouched with iron. It is called a module but simply is a fan and peltier coil, not really worth the $500, think was made by Lear.

Thanks for your advice Zeppfish Thumbs Up - Results are as follows:

Firstly, the cooled option works fine and doesn't cut out, so I switched over to the heated option and it cuts out after a few moments - so it looks like it's the thermistor, which looking at your post means I need a peltier cell.

Do you (or anyone for that matter) know if it's DIY'able? If not, what sort of costs can I be expected to pay at an Indie?

Thanks again!
