Just following up on fitting a resistor to fool the ystem into believing the heater element is still there and thus stop the fault being recorded:

Why is a 10 ohm 100 watt resistor specified? At 10 ohms and 14.2 volts, the current through the resistor would be:

E=IR

or I=E/R

I=14.2/10 = 1.42 amps

Power=EI (or I squared x R)

14.2v x 1.42A = 20.16 watts (or 1.42 x 1.42 x 10)

So 100 watts is overkill.

Seeing as a 10 ohm 25 watt resistor is A$11 plus shipping from Element14, I should have some 22 ohm 10 watt wire wound resistors in my electronics parts so I can try a couple wired in parallel.. If I don't, a 22 ohm 10 watt resistor is only A$1.80 at my local electronics parts store. Ron B. VK2OTC

Australia 2005 Range Rover Vogue 4.4 V8 Zambezi Silver

I replaced mine with a genuine BMW one off something, I cant remember what, the model wasn’t sold in Australia, so it had to be imported, that was probably a couple of years ago, haven’t looked at it since.
SMALL bead of silicon, I have been messing with vehicles for 70 years, I never use silicone on engines or gearboxes.
Bought a car recently, cheap, got to remove the sump and front timing cover because of oil leaks.
It’s previously been sealed with silicon. I always use and will use Permatex, it dose not dry or go hard and it just comes apart when you need it to. I don’t know of anything better.
Not had a T,stat for months,
Just a thought
Thermostats when cold, close the waterway to the radiator off and open the bypass, so the water circulates in the engine, heating the engine up quickly.
Most ware in engines, is said to occur when the engine is cold.
Thermostats when hot, open the waterway to the radiator and close the bypass to the engine, circulating the water through the radiator. RR 2005 4.4 petrol

p38arover, you must be very OCD to worry about a soft fault that throws a code that can only be read with diagnostics and doesn't give any warnings on the dash...

As I said all those years ago, the plug controls a switch, it isn't a sensor so it doesn't effect anything.

It's just another fault code to add to the many left by Land Rover when they modified the BMW bits to fit a fatty...

The most important bit is that it's not left connected..... Thumbs Up Pete

Am a bit late to the party - but finally got hold of a BMW part made by Mahle - it's the 88deg thermostat one and installed it without any probs Smile

It does throw up a soft fault on my IID scanner, but thanks to this thread I am not bothered by it.

Looking at doing this MOD along with refreshing the cooling pipework. I have been on the ABBES Performance website, but I cannot see how you actually order one. I have emailed them but several days later no response.
Looking like I may have to use the BMW 88c thermostat.

First post as well, so hello all

Doesn't matter how you do it, just get the temp down and your fatty will thank you.... Thumbs Up Pete

I did the mod a few years back but later replaced it with the 88 deg C thermostat. It's a bettrer way to do it and there's not much difference in price. Ron B. VK2OTC

United Kingdom 2005 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 V8 Cairns Blue

Hi Folks.
I don't post here very often as you guys always have it covered and this occasion is no exception but, I felt I had to say something as I am so impressed. After owning my 2005 4.4 V8 petrol for the past 9 years coming up, I just bit the bullet and replaced my 105ºC thermostat for the 88ºC VEMO V20-99-0161 which I found on the UK ebay site, but ships from Germany €37.50 + €25.00 postage (around £55 all-in) here https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/264788105234.

I fitted it this morning and after a good burping session we went for a decent run along the local bypass, so some fairly hard acceleration and about 40 minutes of constant driving in light traffic and I can't believe the difference. Not so much in actual performance as the old girl has always performed well but in the way the car feels i.e. a lot less stressed. My GAPIID live data showed 105-109ºC with the old thermostat yesterday along the same stretch of road with the radiator outlet temp hardly moving above 30ºC, so the stat was barely opening most of the time. Today, with the 88ºC thermostat fitted, it didn't rise above 98ºC with the radiator outlet temp regularly rising to 30ºC and sometimes 40ºC proving that the thermostat was opening much lower and maintaining a lower coolant temperature. (It's 5ºC ambient here yesterday and today)
When I lift the bonnet there is no huge waft of heat, I can actually touch the top hose for a second or three without losing my skin and no smell like (as someone else appropriately put it) Chernobyl! I have just replaced all of the quick attach/detach hoses too so I am hoping to extend their life past the usual 10years as a result of this mod. So huge thanks to everyone on here for your hard work and great communication skills.
I can add that my car warms up just as quickly as it always has and my LPG switches on automatically exactly the same as it always did. The only difference I can see is, occasionally on very cold days, I put the heat temperature to max and open the dash vents so I get absolutely toasted. Set like that, if I gave the car a good old boot full, the heater temperature would boost to almost scalding and my face would be like a beetroot. That doesn't happen now. The heater is plenty hot enough and I still feel a mild increase in heater temperature if I boot it, but it is much less severe obviously because the coolant isn't scalding hot.
So I really cannot see any downside to this mod and hope my comments help someone else take the plunge. Thanks again to all involved.

Pleased it has helped you, it's a weird feeling when you first drive it and difficult to describe but the engine is thanking you...

It's come a long way since the modification was first done all those years ago, glad it has helped so many to see the light... Thumbs Up Pete
