Just following up on fitting a resistor to fool the ystem into believing the heater element is still there and thus stop the fault being recorded:

Why is a 10 ohm 100 watt resistor specified? At 10 ohms and 14.2 volts, the current through the resistor would be:

E=IR

or I=E/R

I=14.2/10 = 1.42 amps

Power=EI (or I squared x R)

14.2v x 1.42A = 20.16 watts (or 1.42 x 1.42 x 10)

So 100 watts is overkill.

Seeing as a 10 ohm 25 watt resistor is A$11 plus shipping from Element14, I should have some 22 ohm 10 watt wire wound resistors in my electronics parts so I can try a couple wired in parallel.. If I don't, a 22 ohm 10 watt resistor is only A$1.80 at my local electronics parts store. Ron B. VK2OTC

I replaced mine with a genuine BMW one off something, I cant remember what, the model wasn’t sold in Australia, so it had to be imported, that was probably a couple of years ago, haven’t looked at it since.
SMALL bead of silicon, I have been messing with vehicles for 70 years, I never use silicone on engines or gearboxes.
Bought a car recently, cheap, got to remove the sump and front timing cover because of oil leaks.
It’s previously been sealed with silicon. I always use and will use Permatex, it dose not dry or go hard and it just comes apart when you need it to. I don’t know of anything better.
Not had a T,stat for months,
Just a thought
Thermostats when cold, close the waterway to the radiator off and open the bypass, so the water circulates in the engine, heating the engine up quickly.
Most ware in engines, is said to occur when the engine is cold.
Thermostats when hot, open the waterway to the radiator and close the bypass to the engine, circulating the water through the radiator. RR 2005 4.4 petrol

p38arover, you must be very OCD to worry about a soft fault that throws a code that can only be read with diagnostics and doesn't give any warnings on the dash...

As I said all those years ago, the plug controls a switch, it isn't a sensor so it doesn't effect anything.

It's just another fault code to add to the many left by Land Rover when they modified the BMW bits to fit a fatty...

The most important bit is that it's not left connected..... Thumbs Up Pete

Am a bit late to the party - but finally got hold of a BMW part made by Mahle - it's the 88deg thermostat one and installed it without any probs Smile

It does throw up a soft fault on my IID scanner, but thanks to this thread I am not bothered by it.

Looking at doing this MOD along with refreshing the cooling pipework. I have been on the ABBES Performance website, but I cannot see how you actually order one. I have emailed them but several days later no response.
Looking like I may have to use the BMW 88c thermostat.

First post as well, so hello all

Doesn't matter how you do it, just get the temp down and your fatty will thank you.... Thumbs Up Pete
