On the 2011 5.0 S/C I just bought I'm currently around 11-12mpg- rather addictive that loud pedal!

I expect it will improve somewhat when (if) the novelty wears off!  Formerly happymadison1978

If you do longer runs at motorway speeds, certainly 20+ mpg is achievable. I average about 21 mpg with a mix of cross London and motorway journeys.

If you're mainly stop/start around town, and/or enjoying the loud pedal, even 12mpg is pretty good! When I'm stuck in bad London traffic I struggle to get 10 mpg...

@PaulBrown. Thanks for that, good to know My commute is only 10.5 miles with highway with only the last mile at slow traffic. should hopefully get closer to 16 eventually  Formerly happymadison1978

Stephen - I'd hope that should be fairly easily achievable - I find as long as you can keep a consistent speed >30 mph, reasonable mpg is possible even with the 5.0 S/C. It's the stop/start driving and bursts of acceleration that really hammer it.

Once you've stopped enjoying the noise you can try the next challenge of maximising your mpg

I have not long got a 2011 4.4 tdv8 changed from a td6 3.0 2004 and must admit I have a heavy right foot and was getting 19mpg in the 4.4 but drove it sensible today (boring) and got 31 mpg on a 45mile journey so happy with that mind you I did not get it with mpg worry in mind love the big girl, have a LC which is my play toy for a bit of a blast which going quick can get that to under 10 mpg

5500 miles of mixed driving over last 6 months
Measured using GPS-based fuel tracking app (TripLog, using TripLog Bluetooth beacon)

Average 25mpg
Best single journey managed 35mpg on 150 mile motorway run on cruise @70mph

A few things to note:
- dashboard indicated mpg is optimistic by about 5% (I know I can change this using IID but cba)
- initially I was using Shell V-Power almost exclusively. I then bought 5L of Archoil AR6900-D (https://www.powerenhancer.co.uk/product/archoil-ar6900-d-max-advanced-diesel-fuel-synthesis/) and use that with standard diesel. My MPG has gone up marginally but expect my engine fuel system is now cleaner and more effective as the Archoil contains more powerful additives than the V-Power. Recommended dose is 10ml per 10L of fuel so it works out just under 2p per litre additional cost and thus between 75-90% cheaper than the premium diesel extra cost over standard.
- engine oil and filter was changed at the start of the 5500mil
- running Pirelli Scorpion Verdes and no bolt-ons such as racks or lights affecting drag. Andy

Mine's doing a steady 30mpg average and this is mostly M-way at just under 70mph. Fuel offset via IID is now at -5% as this is closer to the actual fill to the brim calculations. Had thought that after having the new thermostat fitted and it's now running at the proper operating temperature (closer to 90 deg rather than 70 deg) it would run more efficiently but I'd say it's using a bit more fuel now.... 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Got avge 28mpg over 1600 miles to Alps and back. cruise speed roughly 75mph.

I am averaging 31.4 mpg in the Westminster 4.4tdv8. I have seen as high as 37 on a run at around 60 - 65 mph.
Really impressed by how smooth it is.

Do some folks REALLY just believe the dashboard readout? Surely not?
The above posts are totally meaningless unless properly validated (which some are, to be fair):
For example, my L405 TDV6 regularly displays consumption values WELL above 30mpg, but when I calculate weekly brim-to-brim fuel consumption using the “second click” method, I usually get 24-29mpg, about 5-7mpg less than the displayed value.
Human nature often seems to desire for some reason to exaggerate the economy of our vehicles, and the manufacturers are no exception, -it sells vehicles. I’m more inclined to believe the worst figures posted here for that reason.
I would encourage all here to gather good, honest data in regard to actual milage covered vs actual fuel recorded at the pump, and type of journey be it urban city commute/Sunday A-road cruise/Motorway blast.
Just don’t read it off the dashboard
Especially so for diesel vehicles with DPF regen which can eat fuel at an alarming rate under regen.  “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

take 10% off the computer reading and you will be about right.

I log my mileage and fill ups and there are big differences in the computers accuracy between manufacturers. My FF is by far the worst at close to 9%, my BMWs were 3-4% out and the closest is my wife’s Golf R, which has a 0.8% variance over 45k miles.
