2008 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Stornoway Grey
5.0 SC or 4.4 TDV8

Healthy debate as it's nearly weekend. If you are doing less than 15,000miles per year, but tow a trailer/caravan for 2-3000 of those miles and have in the region of £30k to spend what would it be.

This was a question at work today....so no it's not me changing my car, just interesting conversation

Tax, MPG, running cost, initial cost, pitfalls.....

i'd go for the diesel...more torque for easier towing and no doubt the 8 speed gearbox will help.. ... - .- -.

...and being a SC man that's another angle to throw in the mix Stan Cool

My first thought was exactly that, 8spd box and if remapped if would be 'quick enough'....

He's currently got a landcruiser and a porsche boxster...wants the tow capability but fun when you floor it ! Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

Yes Stan but you can't have as much 'fun' driving a diesel!
Me I would go SC also, you don't tow all the time in that 15 k and if only a caravan been hauled around, you won't know it's there....much!

But it that petrol vs oil burner debate. .....I'm always a petrol fan....I have 4 v8's and like them Mr. Green If it dont work.......burn it!

If the IId tool cant fix it.......burn the FF.

If the FF cant be fixed......buy a Land Cruiser!

If the LC cant be fixed..............................................BUY a horse !!

A valid question. I'm struggling with the same for a future strategy when it's time to get a L405. But for me the choice would then be between a SDV8 or 5.0...

My thing is a couple of annual excursions, some 2000-5000 miles each and occasionally with a 2 tonne trailer. But locally I tow really heavy, often around 3800 kg, but mostly not more than 150 miles from home Whistle

I want a 5.0 but think it's probably more reasonable MPG and torque with the SDV8.

I would go for the 4.4 remapped it is quick enough for a FFRR, I know a couple of mates with the 5.0 SC and I don't see the point because in the real world the 4.4 is fast enough to deal with anything you need, if I want to go fast I will get in my M5 which makes the 5.0 SC look like a 300TDi towing a caravan. A 3 tonne 4x4 is never going to be as fun to drive as a much lighter well balanced car, the FFRR is a great tool and ticks many boxes and I am sure I will always have one in my life but I just don't see the point of a the 5.0 SC in this country (like Jeremy Clarkson said). I know a lot of people hate diesels (me included a few years ago) and yes they will never give you that buzz you get in a petrol but most people who buy a FFRR don't want to drive like they stole it or think they are a rally driver so I do think the diesel will hold it's value better, be cheaper to run and the 4.4 does not seem to have many serious issues. I will stand in line and wait to be shot at by the SC owners Very Happy

I had the same dilemma recently... Chose the 8sp gearbox... Why oh why didn't they put the 8sp box in the 5.0SC 322 like they did a year later in the 405?!?!...

The 4.4 is an astonishing engine MUCH more so than the 3.6 it replaces (not that its a bad engine) but the 4.4 just astounds me every time i drive it...

I am averaging 30+MPG get 500+ miles between fill ups... Handy when driving down to the south of France (not having to stop 3,4 or 5 times!) Not the be all & end all i know but handy never the less...

It depends if you compare the 5.0 SC to the 4.4 or 3.6 TDV8. I almost bought a 3.6, it needed a turbo changed and I backed out because I didn't know what could have caused the turbo failure and how much more misery was there going to be in the future.

Found the 5.0 SC i have now and it is BRILLIANT, love it.

In the old days I'd prefer the diesels as they were bullet proof (my old Peug 405 never missed a beat apart from the one time where it didn't want to stop running due to the fuel shut off valve rubber being gone, had to clamp the fuel hose to stop it until I replaced the valve). But modern diesels like the TDV8 have a lot of stuff on them that can go wrong. Now it seems that the 3.6 is a bit less reliable than the 4.4 from what I "feel" on the forum here but it is hardly statistics and knowledge. Just that quite some stories on here of turbo/EGR issues.

I would go for the 5.0 SC any time as I like it A LOT. Then again if there is a really nice 4.4 TDV8 coming up at a very decent price, not sure whether I'd say no to it.

From what I read on the forum both cars are pretty good Smile. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

I have never driven a SC so can't compare but I know my 4.4 TDV8 is more than quick enough without being remapped, it is a delight to drive either solo or towing, most of its life is towing.

It is quicker than my old 4.4 petrol and the eight speed box is superb.
