mjdronfield- my problem is that I've not driven the TDV8 or the Td6 so I genuinely have no idea which one I would prefer. I am making my decisions based on the wonderful comments/ experiences that are shared on this forum.

Might be worth finding a few Td6's to drive after I see this TDV8 tomorrow. I think if you have owned a Td6 and then gone to a TDV8 then there would be no going back but as a RR newbie I have no point of reference! I have a friend who loves his Td6 and is backing it all the way! I was just worried about comments which were made saying its sounds like an agricultural vehicle and that it struggles with power? I'm not in the market for a rally car so I'm not bothered about speed etc but I want to be able to tow with it comfortably and know that I have the power there if I need to overtake etc.

I suppose I really cant make a decision until I have driven them both. Off to search out a Td6 to add to my viewing list.... Thumbs Up

The car was at the Bishopbriggs dealership, and the nearest LR is Taggarts on Maryhill Road. Only 5 miles away. Must be that one? All will be revealed tomorrow. If I go....

Well to the best of my knowledge, there are maybe 3 within a 20 mile radius, in Stirling, Glasgow and Motherwell, but certainly not "round the corner"!

There is a LR diagnostic "specialist" not far from them, which I've used once before, but it most certainly isn't a main dealer! Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

Scotland 2014 Range Rover Vogue SDV6 Santorini Black

The RR search does need some care (as does selecting any car), otherwise you could get stung; and for all the 'as new' looks and history checks that might be available, one of your biggest litmus tests should be your gut instinct as to whether all feels as it should or does not, not just with the car but with the seller.

You will know the answer to the gut instinct question by now but remember, it's not just getting it off the forecourt, it's what after sales support you feel you will get within whatever warranty period is offered. Our car needed many thousands spending on it within the months following the purchase. We were very lucky that the seller was a committed professional who had the resources, means and reputational need to make good, but the experience was still stressful and unpleasant.

The car might be good, it might not. However... As Stan said previously, if this is how ambiguous they are being now, how will they be once they have your cash. It seems like you have not had a straight answer to anything so far and if told it was raining outside, you'd probably then want to look outside and check!

"Slippery fish" comes to mind but hopefully that image is wrong Thumbs Up

Gut feeling isnt good in this case. I'm more perturbed by the attitude of the salesman than anything else! And as you rightly point out, if anything were to go wrong would I have the confidence that they would rectify? Not on the basis of my experience thus far Mad

There are enough used FF out there to be picky about where you buy from so if you get the tiniest problem just walk away Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

My gut instinct tells me to walk away from this one. The bellowing smoke on your last visit would be my main concern. I cant think of any reason why the car would bellow out smoke the way you described unless there was a serious underlying issue. I would be concerned that the dealer would look to mask this somehow as they know your looking for it now. Not sure how they could mask it but I don't think I would want to risk it myself.

Especially given the attitude of the dealer/sale person. Everything tells me to leave this car and look else where. As I already mentioned I had a remapped TD6 for 6 years and before selling I removed the remap box and really did notice the drop in power, and when I drove the 3.6 TDV8, well this engine is just in a totally different ball park. I really cant see the point in you getting a TD6 with your budget if your looking at a 2007/8 car as the road tax will be identical for both the TD6 and the TDV8, so the only difference would be getting a lower mileage TD6 as to a higher mileage TDV8.

The dealer I bought my car from was great, no pressure about agreeing prices etc before test drive, he just gave me the keys and sent me on my way, didn't even come along with me. Left him to look my car over. This new car had rusty rear wheel arches that had been poorly repaired so I just asked them to leave it as I would prefer to get it repaired myself, and used this to barter for a better price. Dealer was more than happy with that arrangement.

Good luck with the search what ever you decide, and don't let the rose tinted glasses mask over any issue with the car if you do decide to check it out tomorrow.

I see what you are saying VSK. Suppose you pays your money and you makes your choice. I've driven a TDV8 at the Land Rover Experience at Eastnor Castle, and the engine is smoother and quieter than the Td6, but I only notice mine when cold and I'm stood behind it locking the garage door......... once you are on the move, its more than quiet enough. I did have a Td5 Discovery for 4 years before it though, so it could be relative !

Suppose I'd really like a TDV8 next, with the Overfinch aero kit on if I'm honest, but are they worth double what mine's prob worth. Not so sure. Makes it harder to justify the money to change. Perhaps I should have waited a couple of years and bought a TDV8 now.......food for thought......... 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Kingpleb, agreed, which is why I specified if VSK went for TD6 from 2007/8 it would not make sense. Wink

If VSK decides to go for an earlier pre 2006 TD6 which would be the majority of TD6's out there then the road tax would indeed be less.

As VSK mentioned a budget potential of 20k I would assume that would be enough to get a TDV8 from 2007/8. I have seen plenty of TDV8 Vogues going for around the 20k mark. I guess its down to what mileage the cars have as well, and would imagine to fit the 20k budget the mileage is most likely going to be over 65k.

VSK also expressed some thought around buying an older TD6 allowing for money towards a good warranty etc, I guess the only way to decide this is to try both a TDV8 and a TD6 and make a decision based on preference towards a later TDV8 car with a smoother more powerful engine and better gearbox with no money to put towards a warranty, or go for an older TD6 with less power and not as smooth an engine but with the peace of mind of a warranty. I guess only VSK can make that decision once the opportunity to try both engines has been done.

And VSK may also want to try the 4.4 Jag petrol engine also which should be even cheaper than the TDV8. Just not so many of these around.
