Rust Found - Please clean your arches today - Preventable

Hi Guys,
I'm a bit gutted Big Cry as I have found some rust/rot on my RR on the botom corner of the rear quarters (bottom corner of the rear door area). there is rust and if I push my my finger in it is slightly soft. I'm gutted because this could have been preventable as I have previously kept the arches clean on other cars but it has passed me by on this occasion.

So don't delay jet off behind those arches or even better still remove the inner liner and clean it properly and protect. You can feel all the soil that is packed in there, which traps moistore and then turns to rust and rot. Unfortunately in past experience when you get rust it is very difficult to get rid of it for good.

I have also got a bit of rust on the rear tailgate on the bottom edge to the left of the number plate trim. Occasionally I get a build up of water that releases when I open my boot especially after washing the car. The drain hole in this area seems to be clear, have you any thoughts ?

Please don't get me wrong my car is a 2002 115K milage it is not mint and would love to have better paintwork which I never seem to have time to do, detail polish etc but I should have caught this, so learn by mistake a capture the problem today as prevention is better than cure.

Ouch that's a pain. Anybody with a late 05/55 onwards check now as you'll still be covered by Land Rover's Anti-Corrosion warranty.

I do my best to keep mine clean. I have only noticed surface rust on mine under the car, nothing major but its there. Reformed

I think you'll find they will turn around and just say that you haven't had the yearly body inspection hasn't been carried out and just fob you off Sad

The rust that you have has I suspect been caused by water accumulation inside the panel and is now through
to the outside. I have the same problem (2002 Vogue) in my rear quater panel. The car is currently in a Land Rover bodyshop and even with discount the replacement panel fitted and finished is costing £2300.
A new tailgate will be much easier to replace.

Had a look at mine tonight - took the nearside plastic trim and chrome side bar off, not to bad but definately worth the effort to remove as there are clear signs of danger. Rust converter and a good seal to follow.
Will try to add some photos.

Good call. J

Hi S11X TT,
I used photobucket, if you register for free, upload your pics, then when you hover over the pics 4 options come up, use the bottom 4th option click it and it copies the address, then paste it (ctrl V) in your post and hay presto.

Yes, mine has chrome bars which came off first - 2x 13mm bolts and 4x 10mm. The trim was held on by half a dozen plastic screws which came off very easily.. well worth a couple of hours if you have an older ffrr and want to keep it intact.

I also took off the rear wheel arch plastic and had a good look inside there also.

the recess you can see has the plastic screws inside, quite an easy job to remove/ replace.
Gave it a tidy underneath while I was on.

all back on..

Offside to do next time I get a day off (although it seems ok visually as compared to the nearside which seemed borderline).

On the offside the WABCO Air Reservior is stopping the removal of the chrome side bar. Which may stop the removal of the plastic side sill cover. Has anyone had any experience of removing the reservior? (It looks like a small silver coloured silencer).

Thanks
