Assuming the egr valve isn't jammed open in the first place which they frequently are.
On a diesel these valves are usually so gummed up by 50k they don't work anyway. If you are lucky the valve is jammed shut and not passing exhaust gases so no need for a egr replacement kit, if you are unlucky the valve is jammed open or partially open in which case the build up of gunge in the inlet manifold continues unabated.
It's definitely worth taking the valve off and having a look at it's condition internally and either cleaning it out or replacing it with new or a byepass kit.
Why this isn't in the lr maintenance schedules is beyond me.

Exactly.

The benefit of stopping the valve opening in the map, stops the vaccum (SP!) activating. Keeps it a bit more stock. Blanking plate if you are worried about any gasses seeping though and it's ideal. Used to have:

Now have:
2008 SSRR 3.6 TDV8 - HSE and plenty of toys

Do these plates completly block off the EGR, or just restrict it, i.e. do they have a little hole in? __________________

The plate blocks the exhaust gas flow completely, no hole.

if you do use the blanking kit then you could always sell the egr valve on ebay, thats if you dont want to put your fullfat back as stock..

Well, have run with the vacuum pipe disconnected for a few weeks, with no discernable difference in performance / behaviour or mpg. So I have put it back on for now, and await a dry day to take the EGR valve off and have a look. .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember Wink

It adjusts the valve according to throttle position and load on the engine.

The egr valve is a spring loaded valve that is normally closed to the exhaust inlet pipe. Application of vacuum opens the valve against the spring pressure.
No vacuum, it should be shut unless it can't seat properly due to gunge.

The pipe needs to be sealed off so that the ECU does not throw up fault codes
