ill post pics with a write up for you ...yes you can just plug iphone straight in using the iphone lead that comes with it or via bluetooth,
im going to add this to the little sqaure area in front of the gear leaver so it looks more factory fitted

well first of all you need to remove the end caps on the dash as below to do this you need to pull the black end covers off and release the airvent to release the air vent you need to put a screw driver into the vent and release the clips inside holding it in place (there will be 4 of these on each vent,
once they are off its just a case of undoing the three tork screws on each end cap plus one extra one on the nearside vent that holds the drink holder in place.

once removed your left with this

next you need to remove the top dash cover there are two tork screws at each end and two under the speaker grill, the grill just lifts up from the front and unclips ...once the four little tork screws are out just undo the ones that you see along the top of the dash (i think 7 in totel).
Now slide the dash top towards you and lift up just enough so that you can unplug the centre speaker then remove the whole top like this.

now to remove the ugly MID unit thats very straight forward just unbolt the 6 tork screws holding it in place theres 4 on the top and another 2 hidden behind the trim that runs along side the unit

now lift the unit up and unplug it all, once you have the MID and surround out now you just need to slide the MID out of the plastic surround/holder its in so you should end up with just this

as you can see ive cut the lip off the top which allows the new unit to slide all the way back and also at the bottom in each corner theres two raised bits of plastic i also cut these off too...now turn the plastic surround over so that your looking at the back and make a cut out like in the next pic.

this is to allow all the plugs on the rear of the new unit to plug in.

you should have this plug in your car which is a 40 pin bmw plug
at this stage it may be a good idea to run the lead that goes to the mid computer down towards your glove box ready for if you want to move the mid there.

this will just plug straight into the adapter lead they provide also you get an ariel adapter so you need to conect the end that says fm to your old lead and the other end to the unit.
as you can see in the pic below there is a blue ant lead that is conected to nothing this needs to be bridged into the purple lead that goes to the canbus box so that your switchs will illuminate

ariel conection below

now you need to put your ipod lead where you want it and the same with the gps lead they give you, i fitted my ipod lead down the side off my centre console like below

i then fitted my gps on top of my dash right at the front but to be fair there may be better places to put either.

im afraid there are no pics of them being fitted as i forgot sorry.
now its just a case of putting it all back together so do the above but in reverse ....dont worry if you new unit feels a bit loose in its housing as once you bolt the top dash back on it will clamp it down nicely

as you can see in the last pic the buttons will not light up thats because when i first installed it i forgot to conect the blue lead i mentioned earlier to the purple one that goes to the canbus box.
so heres another pic of it with it wired up and set to red on the led's there is a choice of yellow red or orange (ive now got it set to orange as its a close match with the switchs in the car)

i hope this was of help and im sorry for any bad spelling or hard to follow instructions "RANGEISM WILL NOT BE TOLERATED"

Well, I started the install today, pulled the dash off, fitted the new unit in, and...... they have sent me the wrong plug!!.
The plugs they have sent me, do not fit the bmw 40-pin plug.
Hopefully, they will urgently send me the correct one.
Have e-mailed them, so all I can do is wait, with the Rangie in bits!!
Will keep you posted.
