I would have thought it is possible to get VIN insurance which is arranged on a short term usually monthly basis and does include a journey to a MOT testing station. I have used VIN insurance on imported cars that you cannot road register or tax until it has passed a MOT test.

Just Google 'vin insurance quote'. That should give you some companies to talk to. Doubtless, not all will do it seeing the car has a UK registration number but there should be some joy to be had somewhere.

SORN is a bit of a law unto itself these days.

My RR headed off for a new engine last April with 12 months tax and 6 months insurance left. SORN was the last thing on my mind as in my naivety I expected my car back within a few weeks Laughing

As the weeks turned into months and the warranty company tried every trick in the book to not honour their obligations I still did nothing because when it was ready I just wanted to jump straight back into the car.

At the time I was using my son’s old 7 seat Mercedes on 3rd party insurance (old banger)
When after 6 months of waiting my insurance ran out I decided to insure the Mercedes properly and changed it over with the RR, saving £500 on renewal price at the same time.

Apparently and unbeknown to me I have to notify the authorities that my RR is in a garage minus an engine Neutral And of course still technically insured on the garages policy.

I didn’t and I got fined £100 Censored

Call me old fashioned but I didn’t realise I had to let the authorities know that I had no intentions of driving my RR Fred Flintstone style minus its engine. I thought I paid my taxes so they could catch me if I tried such a thing Laughing

Some will say I should have swatted up on the laws but when my cars in a garage without an engine the last thing on my mind is telling the Government of my woes !!

Appealing is pointless, after listening to 10 minutes of options you get told to put the phone down and pay the fine or you’ll be sent to the tower forthwith Confused

Lesson learned and all that and I’m not a fan of Ealon Musk but think he might have a point when he says this country is turning into a Police state.

Big Brother is watching you.

It is only turning into a Police state with regards to what they are able to do electronically and automate in order to punish normally law abiding citizens with fines and penalties for what are basically administrative errors. With the recent announcements regards AI this will only get worse. Wont be too long before AI replaces any semblance of a Police force as it is too expensive to actually catch real criminals and punish crime. What does this have to do with SORN? Nothing I suppose just venting! Thumbs Up Rant over! Censored _______________________________________________

Maybe I'm a bit out of date but what EXACTLY where you prosecuted/fined for?

Would I be correct that you have fallen foul of this:

Fines for driving without insurance on a vehicle that is not SORN were introduced in 2006. The penalty was a fixed penalty of £100.
You must make a SORN if your vehicle is not insured, even for a short time. You should also make a SORN if you want to break a vehicle down for parts before you scrap it.

I believe it is actaully £50 had you paid it within 33 days??

A fixed penalty notice (FPN) is issued. Penalty set at £100 reduced to £50 if paid within 33 days.
If penalty is not paid, as a criminal offence the case may be pursued through the magistrates’ court. The maximum penalty is £1,000. Sections 144A, 144B, 144C and 144D of the Road Traffic Act 1988. The Motor Vehicles (Insurance Requirements) Regulations 2011.

see https://www.gov.uk/government/publications...e-offences

It was introduced in 2006, nearly 20 years ago. Not sure this is quite a mystery, its actually straight forward and not really any big brother thing, its just part of owning a vehicle.

Sorry, no offence meant but I think you have just not understand the current rules.

I was fined for not making my RR SORN when I changed the insurance over. As it was in a garage minus an engine I didn’t think it was necessary, apparently it is Exclamation

I just wish they would make the same effort when my investigating proper crime Twisted Evil

Definitely my mistake, I’ve been driving since 1980 and have never had a situation where I’ve had to make a declaration like this so it hadn’t even occurred to me.

I thought I was a law abiding citizen Laughing

It’s pretty clear I’ve made no effort to drive the vehicle on a road without insurance, but heaven forbid the authorities use any common sense.

Feel your pain but sadly the world we live in means that electronically fining people is pretty simple.

I don't think its a "big brother' type thing but just a consequence of the rules being applied in a blind way regardless of circumstances as a result of computerisation. I guess the difficulty is that they have no way of knowing that the car isn't being used on the road when its taxed but not insured. They probably don't expect someone to neglect to SORN it.

Its tough but unless the rules change then we are all bound by them.

Perhaps not big brother, just another easy revenue stream. They say we’re paying the highest taxes since world war 2, throw in these ‘unofficial’ taxes and we’re probably paying more than when The Sheriff of Nottingham was doing his thing.
