Mot SORN and insurance woes

Need some advice from the gurus.

As you may know from other threads im awaiting front ACE pipes for my L405. Well thanks to Mikey i now have a set. Top man.

However the local LR indy im using has had a bout of flu and cant sort it for a couple of weeks.

BUT!! My Mot runs out Tuesday and my insurers say the policy isnt valid if theres not MoT.

I intend to SORN it but what can I do about cover till the garage fixes it?

Help.

Is the car still in your possession, or is it at the garage?

Are you sure about the insurance bit ? or is it just that they wont insure you for driving if there is not MOT ( which is fair enough ). V8 or else ...

Hi, you can still insure your car even if it doesn't have an MOT, cars on a SORN for instance can still be insured agains loss, you just can't drive them on the road excepting to and from the testing station, you won't be able to tax it though if that is due without a valid MOT.

I'm surprised they even asked about it, I can't ever recall it coming up before.

I know. For the cars I've had that failed and I needed a few days to sort them ( so out of valid MOT ) , it never crossed my mind that I would be telling the insurance. V8 or else ...

Yes spoke to them today to get an idea of what they want to do.

Flat out said im not covered with no MoT.

Maybe i should try temp cover till the bloody thing is fixed.

They also do not cover it during the hours of 22.00 - 06.00hrs and we live in a semi rural south west.

Im buying some more physical security for now.

Minefield or what.

Cheers.

Dave

How are you supposed to take it for it’s MOT if it’s not insured?

Nor I, nor that an insurance company would only insure between certain hours. I'd be asking if they are going to discount the policy by a 1/3 considering they are only covering 2/3 of the time. V8 or else ...

To confirm then policy was a continuation from the BMW i trade in when i boughtnthe Fatty in June last year.

I will take this opportunity to get a new policy and hopefully better one.

Thanks for ll your inputs o far.

Insurance invalid without an MOT has been a thing for a long time, but I'd always just assumed that only related to driving it & not the theft component.

Every day is a school day.

Sounds a bit suspect.

So as already said, how are you meant to take it for an MOT if there’s no cover. It’s obviously the case that they will not insure you on the road for anything other than to/from an MOT station but the idea that if I park my car on the drive without an MOT and that invalidates my insurance for say a theft claim seems bizarre to me. Do you park it on the street?

You absolutely sure that they aren’t getting their wires crossed and they meant if you continue to drive it on a public highway??

Its parked off-road on my neighbours drive.

I agree i think they have mis understood what i need but have dug there heels in.

Im not sure they want FFRR business if im honest.

I have a chap who will take it to the garage on his low loader so thats covered.

The garage has a test centre next door so once they've removed a kidney to repair it all it can be tested then i will insure it, and, Oh happy day, i get my dream car back
