So I’ve just got round to changing my oil cooler as I’ve had an oil leak down the back of the engine and a very bad burning smell when stationary and smoking.

Anyway I’ve successfully changed the cooler and put it all back together however when plugging the 90 degree coolant pipe into the side of the cooler when rebuilding it didn’t seem to sit very tightly and I didn’t think at the time it would be a good seal but as the. Connector was over the ridge on the oil cooler I assumed it was seated correctly. Unfortunately not as it’s leaking, I did remove the rubber gasket and clean this along with the plastic ring that seem to sit in-front. Can someone give me if these seals are replaceable without buying all the coolant pipe section, and how is the seal plastic ring and the connector supposed to sit onto the cooler?

I know the problem well enough, I have probably already replaced 20 oil coolers, I always do the following: if you loosen the screw to the right of the 90 degree hose and make a small bent metal bracket and then mount it like a washer, this metal bracket presses it The hose is nice and tight and, above all, straight to the oil cooler connection. Otherwise, buy a coolant hose with a 90 degree bend and attach it with normal clamps.

Finished changing out my leaking oil cooler for new Nissins unit today, bought new gaskets but didn't need them as the new unit came complete, so some spares up for grabs, I'll put up for sale at a discount later.

Also took the oportunity to replace all the oil, coolant etc. root around for anything untoward, nothing found really all of the pipes in excellent condition.

Couple of lessons learnt there so I'll add to the wiki guide:

1. the wee 18mm x 2.5 mm washer inside the right angled water junction on the cooler was perished so 2 day delay while a replacement arrived, did change the 2 small ones on the cooler rear though, should have got this one with the other bits Doh ! I also cut off that pipe clamp and replaced with a spring clip as it's easier to remove the water pipe from the connector due to other metalwork in the way, then take off the connector sans pipework as you want to be changing the O ring on the bench not in situ and definately don't want to be losing that spring clip.
