Floppy Deployable Side Step? Motor gone?

hi guys

My driver side deployable side step wasn't retracting all the way then when I was lubing them (spray) I opened the drivers door to extend them and I heard a real thump/crack sound.

Now it is not retracting and/or floppy. Meaning I can move it up and down with my hand. The pass side does not d that...

Motor gone? Gears?
Any tips very welcome.

. Cheers, Greg

looking a bit more of this firstly I've read most issues lie with (lack of) lubrication. In my case that may have been the cause of the crack sound but not now.

I can hear the motor whirring, and it sometimes pulls the step up a bit, but not all the way. And it's very floppy as I mentioned.

I think one of the drive gears gave way, does anyone know if they can be repaired?
There does not seem to be anything in the workshop manual. I can only find the fitting instructions pdf.

Any help appreciated.

. Cheers, Greg

Frustrating, sorry to hear. Have deployables on mine. Lubricate every few months. Sounds like some of the gears may have snapped on the motor, so at it turns it catches the step.

Sure others on here may have some other ideas. Smile

Would you look to repair or remove the steps completely.

Small metal wedge shape in the bracket that moves, have a look at the bracket that still works and you may see the part, it is held in place with a small bolt, no part number, but look on line at industrial engineer supply companies they may have some.

Yes I did but can't remember where I got the wedge key from, it was a engineer supply firm on line i think. Sorry no pics I can just about manage to log on to the internet, clueless with tech.

I've got a handful of those motors on the way from China to have a look at and bung on the site, but I probably won't have them for a few weeks yet.

I was actually meaning to ask the collective wisdom here if they are a part that tends to go. If so, I'll get a pallet of them in progress so I can have them well-priced. 2017 4.4 SDV8 Autobiography in black

My experience of these steps is that the motors seem quite robust, I think the biggest problem is the brackets/hinges seizing or getting damaged by idiots with trolly jacks. When I wrecked one of mine I found that they were ridiculously expensive (and are now unobtainable) and the motor couldn’t be removed from the bracket without butchering the bracket.
You might be onto something if you can get brackets to sell with the new motors?

I've already got brackets/hinges, stock is low, but three pallets of L322 and L405 are on the water as we speak.
