sorry if i am covering old ground and or missed the point. But am I right in thinking that if you buy a 2018 onwards SDV6 or V8 and the crank snaps / engine terminates itself then there is no way of getting the replacement parts for them ? I am mulling over a 2018 onwards range rover but trying to work out which is the best route to go down.

Not as much of an issue on the V8, but a few comparatively recent reports been coming in around bearing failure. Crank snapping is much more of an issue on the V6 with issues being reported for a few years.

Don’t have any figures though, just observing on here.

First of all, my sympathy and condolences for this engine failure. On the subject of engine repairers, I can only speak for Germany: there is no reputable repairer here, and I don't know of any SDV8 that has gotten far with a repaired engine, but if it is defective again within the "warranty" it is always due to the wrong oil, too short Intervals or driving errors are referred to. I can only advise everyone from experience to sell the defective car or for a visible one!! That seems a very good shout as the second one has less than 50,000 miles and is side structural. Even after taking everything you need out there’s still a load of stuff you can sell from that and scrap the shell. If you’ve got somewhere to store the donor whilst it’s being broken up it could end up almost a free engine swap.

Yes and no, depends on what engine you go for and what model year!

The 306DT (SDV6) engine is still available from JLR as short block, strippped or full engine, as this was a joint project with PSA (Ford, Peugeot & Citroen). The engine is used in many models of the respective manufacturers although all are not interchangeable, due to mainly different engine mounting points (they were transversly mounted in some applications).

The 448DT (TDV8/SDV8) fitted to the FFRR L322 & L405 are no longer available as this was originally designed by Ford (when they owned JLR) for the Ford F150 pickup, as they thought they could market a diesel version of the F150 to the US market. It was made at the Ford Engine plant in Mexico for this sole application, but once the bean counters at Ford reviewed the figures they soon realised that the $6K uplift in price for a diesel F150 would never sell due to the low price of 'gas' in the US. It then sat on the back burner for a while until Ford decided they needed a replacement Diesel V8 for their FFRR and they had just the engine sitting with no home.

JLR (under Tata ownership) terminated the build contract with Ford in 2019 giving them 3 years notice that they no longer needed the 448DT (as it was replaced with the Ingenium range of engines in the latest L405's) hence the supply has now dried up.

Jumping forward, JLR, in a bit of a mess with loads of buy-back failed V8 L405's contracted Ford to produce a batch of short blocks, however as the 448DT Mexico engine production line has now been dismantled they could not fulfill the whole order and therefore just supplied the components, these were then shipped to the UK and assenbled by Autocraft Drivetrain Solutions in Grantham.

It’s a good idea but having had a quick look at the website I don’t think they are involved in work for the public, it’s almost certainly on behalf of manufacturers. Always worth a phone call of course but I wouldn’t be too hopeful.

I think the idea of buying a whole vehicle has the most merit, at least you can be sure if it’s origin and at the end of the project you have a wealth of parts to trade out that can offset the initial outlay.

Good luck which ever direction you choose.

Thank you everyone, this has been SO helpful. At least now I have all the options and know what I need to plan - I was a bit lost.

Given a noon runner is so worthless, I think it's worth a 10k gamble with a used engine in some fashion. After all, the car, running is beautiful and worth a few quid!

I’m assuming aftermarket warranties for SDV8’s are now either going to be very expensive to buy or not available at all.

I ask because I’ve just had my 2017 RR Sports engine go bang at 58k miles (oil dilution). Luckily I had an RAC warranty that covered the 1st £10k. Total bill was £11.6k for a LR reconditioned factory engine. Most components are new they recondition the block and cylinder head. Brand new off the shelf unit was £15k.

I was thinking of moving it on for a 2019/20 V8 FF diesel but now I’m not so sure if used warranties will be ridiculously expensive or not available at all.

I can see my 30 year LR ownership coming to an end. My 2014 (purchased in 2019) FF 5.0 Supercharged with 40k miles on the clock kept breaking injectors for fun at £700 a time and now the ultimate failure on my 2017 Sport.

My first 25 years of LR’s wasn’t without issues but nothing compared to the last 2 lemons Crying or Very sad

I'd be interested to know how you obtained a LR factory unit as none have been available for nearly 3 years. I'm seeing the last price for a full engine at over 23k. L405 SV Autobiography LWB SDV8, finished in Aston Martin China Grey by ETO division.
