Heater fan out of control!!!!!!

2007tdv8.

I've searched the forums but couldn't find anything like this problem, so any help appreciated.

Moderately warm September day today. Came to start the car and found the heater blower blowing like crazy. It's uncontrollable on the dial and even runs ( moderate speed) when switched off, key out and vehicle vacated. It just keeps running. Disconnected the battery and it stops. Reconnected 30 mins later and its back on.

I'm not sure what controls the heater / fan motor, but suspect it must be that.

Any pointers very much appreciated!

Chris

It sounds typically like a failing final stage resistor or FSR. look in the wiki on this website, and there is a good write up re dealing with the problem. It is listed at the bottom of the section headed heating and cooling.

Will do! Thankyou gentlemen!

I saw references to fsr and thought wtf???? And some other acronyms I think to do with fuel heaters.

Anyway, off to the fsr wiki!

Quite easy to replace it. Just a bit fiddly.
I suggest you don’t buy a very cheap replacement as they are not very good and you will have to do it again soon after!
Powerful UK sell them

Id already ordered one from PowerfulUK at £35. A little on the expensive side compared to many on ebay for very possibly the same stuff but I've found their videos to be of great use so I've always thought they're worth supporting over and above a box shifter.

It's due here tomorrow and in preparation I removed the existing unit yesterday without much difficulty.

PowerfulUK's guidance on this is to leave the electrical connection until the unit is released as this helps in getting the unit free and when free the clips on the electrical plug are easily accessible, which is not the case otherwise, so good, helpful advice!

Hopefully the fumbling around in the dark awkward space won't be too taxing on the installation. Time will tell!! C'mon Mr Postman!

The only difficulty with replacing the FSR ( aka the hedgehog ) is the off tilt angle that it comes out on, and the off tilt angle it goes back in, once under there you will see what I mean, you can feel your way to remove it, just make a mental note of the angle it came out, so that when you push the new one back in place the angle is remembered.

The postman did his thing yesterday and I got straight on it. Before attempting to install the new unit I gave the location a darned good familiarisation which helped enormously when fitting the unit. Slotted straight in. I had a struggle for a short while orientating the electrical connection but it clicked into place and a quick test proved all to be well.

Thanks for all comments and advise! Now need to move on to the replacement of the outer cv boot that got damaged when I was replacing the strut following an airbag failure. Some guys have all the fun!
