Oil change - which pump and which new oil and new filter?

Have (and love) my 2016 4.4 SDV. Only had it a few months and done about 5,000 miles
I know about the issues regarding oil dilution so want to change the oil as a preventative measure.

I have looked on Amazon at the manual 9l pumps (about £40).
Are these any good or should I invest in something beefier?

Also, what oil should I be putting back into the good lady?

And what filters?
I have a feeling the Stealership ones will be overpriced and underperforming.

I don't see why people use the manual pumps.

A cheap little 12v pump sucks the oil out in a couple minutes, straight into a container of your choice.

Try Opie oils, they do service kits, 2X 5l cans of oil plus filter element.
Just enter your reg number on their website and you are certain of getting correct spec oil etc.

Just ordered one of these to try out as using my Draper Expert does involve 2 goes to get all the oil out as well as the pouring of it into my used oil jerrycan so this would make it easier. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

That pump looks great Kev, is the tube it comes with long enough to get to the bottom of the sump ? And do you connect on the engine battery terminals? Thx.

Scotland 2013 Range Rover Vogue SE SDV8 Firenze Red

No need for the tube to reach the bottom of the sump as you connect the pump tube to the engine oil extraction pipe which is next to the oil filler cap. This pipe runs all the way to the bottom of the engine sump.

Twist to remove the cap on the extraction pipe, fit the pump tube over the top, loosen the filler cap and suck away! Very Happy

Yep, just connect the pipe to the suction tube and the cables to the battery posts under the bonnet and pump the oil out. Just make sure your engine oil is nice and warm and it'll suck it out in no time. Kev

I like crawling under the truck at least every other oil change(I'm on a 5k rotation) - gives me a chance to poke around and look at other things. I get under there and look and clean and wipe all while letting the sump drain fully. I am not in the 5 minute oil change business - so I have time.
Working from home, I will run down to the shop at lunch and get the Td6 draining - won't go back to finish the job until after dinner...

I changed the transmission fluid on my Daughter's 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee this past week. That damn sump has no drain hole, so I bought a compressor driven xfer pump.

I gotta say - that worked pretty well... but for my 2016 Td6 - I am going to keep using my ramps and crawling under.

I switched to Shell Rotella T6 5W-40 to combat dilution and 5K is just easy to remember. 100, 105, 110, etc.

To chip in:

I tried a 12V pump, a decent Sealey one, and it struggled pumping the oil up through the drain tube.

I have the Draper Professional extractor and it works great, in fact it gets used on several cars a week as proof of its longevity. That gets just as much oil out as draining did.


Re the oil filter, the genuine OEM used by Land Rover is Mahle OX153/7D2. It's about £12, so save yourself a shed load of cash and just order the same thing without the Land Rover box!

Regarding oil, my personal preference is the Petronas 5000 FJ from OpieOils. It's about £60 for 10L, is a proper branded oil and has the Land Rover approval (not just a recommendation) to show that it complies with the standard. On my old TDV8, I still stand by the fact it significantly reduced the James Bond smoke screen over my previous experience with Valvoline and others. Have been using the Petronas on a 4.4 TDV8, my current 4.4 SDV8 and 3.0 TDV6 Jag. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

Total Censored junk. Connector blew off the outlet and covered me and the front of the car with hot engine oil. Luckily I have a lathe and was able to make a proper connector but if you don't just buy the Draper expert. Also rewired it to make the electrical lead longer and remade the suction hose connector. Took about 15 mins to drain the sump but all the time worrying the pump would burn out or sieze up. Properly implemented a pump like this could work well but this model is Censored Censored Censored Censored Censored 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)
