C1 or C3 Oil on a L322 2011 TDV8?

Hi

I do regular oil changes on my L322 at approx 5k miles and I regularly take her on longer journeys to maintain the DPF.

My question is, is C3 oil that detrimental to the engine?

I know it's recommended to use C1 Oil.

The engine will be fine with C3. The DPF’s life will be shortened by how much I’m not sure. Why use C3 at all when C1 is available? 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Thanks for that info.

I also have a Merc E350 and bought 6 x 5l C3 oil for oil changes. I'm trying to use up this stock.
As I said, I change the oil on both every 5k or so - I do lots of euro trips.

That said, at one point, I plan to do a DPF/EGR delete on the L322.

Thing is: Landrover doesn't specify ACEA C1 oil, or C2 or C3 for that matter.
They spec Ford WSS-M2C934-B oil, for the 4.4 TDV8 that is.
And where one can download the ACEA oil sequence showing exactly what specs an oil needs to meet to get a C1 label (for example) there is no such thing for the Ford WSS-M2C934-B specification.
Or better said: I've never seen it.
Claims the WSS-M2C934-B is at least equal to ACEA C1 make sense though as an oil with worse specs won't make the WSS-M2C934-B AND C1.

C1 oil had - past tense as in the latest 2023 ACEA oil sequence the C1 is dropped - pretty low SAPS level maxima, all to protect the DPF.
Imo the only real world difference between C1 and the others is the Phosphorus level.
C1 spec'd a max of 0.05 % m/m where C2 and C3 spec a minimum of % m/m 0.07 with a max of % m/m 0.09.

Would I use a C2/C3 oil in my 4.4 TDV8?
Yes, as modern base oils have benefits too.
Better flow at startup for example, reducing warmup and fuel consumption.

Is Syntium 5000 not the right oil (one of many, I use Smith and Allan), the C1 spec is still the C1 spec even though ACEA don't list C1 anymore the spec didn't change. Geoff

Irrespective of the dropping of the C1 label the standard for the SAPS content still stands as the reason to choose low not mid SAPS oil for the DPF equipped 4.4. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

In the L405 thread, i think there was a semi-consensus that in the loss of C1, C4 would be the next closest suitable option as C2 and C3 were higher in contents that would potentially affect the DPF. ( by how much I dont know though ) V8 or else ...

The only downside to C4 oils is they are / have to be thick to meet the 3,5 mPa.s HTHS.
And therefore will not meet the Ford WSS-M2C934-B.

Oil blenders can, of course, still test for Ford WSS-M2C934-B and if it meets it, it's ok. 2012 4.4TDV8

Castrol is Land Rovers oil partner for fluids, for the 4.4tdv8 2010-2012 they recommend Ford WSS-M2C913 spec and the product for EU cars is Castrol MAGNATEC 5W-30 A5

Personally I use Liqui Moly for my fluids as its easier for me to get in shops where I live. Special Tec F 5W 30 is what they recommend

Castrol
https://www.castrol.com/en_gb/united-kingd...p;id=75767

Has WSS-M2C913 superseded WSS-M2C934-B, I wouldn't keep up with this kind of thing so I'm sure there are people here that know far more. My main thing when I service the car is to use genuine or high quality filters and a good brand of oil, after that its up to the gods because you have no idea as a second, third or tenth owner what everyone else did. Service records are great but I have met a lot of stupid people working in garages in my time!

for any future researchers, this is the actual oil I used, the site recommends the above but the one below is the Ford and JLR spec

Castrol recommend 'Edge' for the TD4.4 V8 with a DPF
https://www.castrol.com/en_gb/united-kingd...p;id=73000
Liquid Molly recommends
https://www.liqui-moly.com/en/ie/top-tec-4....html#2317
The ash content of both the oils linked is very high and is unwise to use in you car unless you want to shorten the usable life of the DPF . 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I tried to follow the thread on the L405 forum on this topic and ended up hopelessly confused.

If there are suitable C1 equivalent (which I understand to mean suitably low ash and/or phosphorous content as to not pose a threat to DPF longevity) oils out there that are the correct spec in all other respects then could someone who uses them simply tell us which they are and where to buy them from?

I, for one, would really appreciate this.

Thanks,

Smith & Allan, Opie Oils are a good place to start. Most places alow you to enter your reg or car model into the parts finders. It realy isn't that hard to find 5w 30 oil in C1 / low SAPS spec. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

As listed by JayGee above, I’ve been using LiquiMoly 4500 in my 4.4 TDV8 for quite a while now and am very very happy with it. It’s practically the only option I can find readily that meets the C1 spec we need. I buy 20L canisters and change every 8,000km. No dpf problems (since I did the 3 O-Ring fix on the intake!). -------------------------

The only important specs for most people with a 4.4SD/TD V8 are the viscosity and the SAPS rating. If you are working the engine hard such as doing serious off roading, towing heavy trailers up hills or blasting down Autobahn's at >200kmh you may want to select a more expensive oil with higher quality base stock to deal with the extra heat and load but for everyone else the cheaper stuff is fine and change it at least 2x a year and at well under 1/2 the JLR recomended miles/Km's ( 5-7k miles seems to be the consensus) 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Hey Jaydee

See I knew someone would be on with better info! Am I right in thinking JLR are saying 24k oil changes? Im doing 10k changes as the car only works a few days a week.

Regarding the High Ash, where can you see that info on the oil spec? I use a fuel additive to each fill so this possibly negates this issue but Im curious how one sees low ash vs high ash on a spec. Also why do oil companies recommend oil that isnt 100% to spec?
