V8 5.0 S/C Water Leak, Camchain Tensioners - Symposer Delete

Close on 2 years ownership of my 5.0 S/C

Always intended on "visiting" the camchain tensioner and guides (96,000mile)

Well after a 70p O ring caused a £600 worth of parts water leak I thought “while I am here I suppose now is the time” - coolant leak was from alloy pipe O ring behind oil filter housing

Camchain assembly now held together with zip ties till I get new tensioners

Guides are in great condition and like the tensioners are the later style

Old tensioners are very weak and not much life left in them - they didn’t even spring out when I released them !

Oh and Range Rover say “it can’t be done with zip ties”

Well we will soon see once I eventually start it up

What’s the worse that can happen - lol lol

The person who stated that obviously didn't get the memo. There is a published Jaguar Land Rover procedure using zip ties to secure the chains while replacing guides and tensioners. Its a bit different to what you have done but it uses zip ties (called tie straps in the manual).

Yep I did say to the "Tech" that the Repair Procedure was available using zip-ties

As I already have the updated guides fitted I slightly modified the procedure and haven't removed the cam wheel covers 2009 - L322 5.0 S/C Autobiography

Any part No Guru’s on here ??

My part number cast into the tensioners is

FX23 6K254 AA

I understand how Ford/JLR usually identify updated parts by the last letter

My question is a FX23 6K264 AB the latest spec tensioner ?

Also known as LR095472

Thanks in advance ! 2009 - L322 5.0 S/C Autobiography

Have you seen the AB suffix on any tensioners?

The last tensioners I replaced were around 6 months ago, purchased from the dealer - they had the AA suffix and I have not heard of any newer revisions.

What a most satisfying sound !!

Pull the pin and CLICK out shot the plunger

Old tensioner is on bench and will not extend as it stuck in now after I “reset” it - lol

Let the rebuilding begin tomorrow

When I was doing mine, someone in America who has a lot of experience rebuilding these told me to use a big screwdriver and gently lift the guide off the tensioner until you hear another click or two. He says he’s seen them skip a tooth when starting if you don’t.

There’s no mention of it in the manual so make of it what you will Smile

I did it on mine and haven’t had any issues in 6000 miles.

The tensioners that I bought from Duckworth’s in September last year were the AB version too.

The amount of pre-tension I had applied to the zip ties I doubt there was any slack left for the tensioner take-up

I understand what was meant by the screwdriver but a slight crank rotation clockwise after fitting tensioner will also put any remaining slack into the tensioner side and I am more than happy it gonna go brum brum once I try to start it - unless it all falls off - lol lol lol 2009 - L322 5.0 S/C Autobiography

2nd tensioner replaced

The old tensioner had a lot more tension then the other one

New crank seal fitted and crank pulley back on

Just need to torque crank bolt without moving crank anti-clockwise at all

Good job I know a mate with a laser cutter

Made me some blanking plates

Symposer delete before Supercharger goes back on

Did an oil change and coupler replace also on the S/C

All going back together nicely - may even go for an engine start soon 😱 💥

That’s interesting…

My 2012 doesn’t have a symposer. I read somewhere that only the Sports had it so interesting that your car is fitted with it.

Not sure why fitted to mine but certainly looked “factory”

Here is a pic of vac pipe Y piece going across engine to actuator on symposer

Thankfully it is no more
