United Kingdom 2014 Range Rover Vogue SDV8 Aintree Green
B1D55-Antenna 2 circuit

All,
My DAB, FM and TV reception has been atrocious (i.e. unusable) from the day I bought the car. TMC on the Sat Nav is also basically useless (very rarely goes green).

I checked some Fault Codes today, and found a B1D55 - Antenna 2 circuit.

Any clues if I am doing 2+2=4?, and if so, where the fault is likely to be (physically)?

Thanks,

Chris.

The DAB antenna is located in the rear spoiler. The connector may have become dislodged at some point. It's easy enough to remove the rear spoiler to take a look. Only a few bolts. Kev

When you say rear spoiler - do you mean the one at the top of the rear tailgate, so it opens with the tailgate? Not the sharks fin?

Thanks,

The DTC from WSM are below, maybe corrosion/water ingress etc?

B1D55-11
Antenna #2 -Circuit short to ground
FM antenna circuit short circuit to ground
Refer to the electrical circuit diagrams and check the FM
antenna circuit for short circuit to ground.

B1D55-13 Antenna #2 -Circuit open
FM antenna circuit open circuit, high resistance
Refer to the electrical circuit diagrams and check the FM
antenna circuit for open circuit, high resistance

The rear spoiler removal is in the WSM in wiki.

Of course the fault could easily be the cable to the info centre or where it connects at the info centre. 2018 SE SDV8 4.4 Byron Blue

Hi ChrisJC,

As usual, some good information from Kot.

Take a look at the Powerful UK videos with regard to tailgate realignment and spoiler removal, these are super helpful if you haven’t done it before, as to which bolts you need to mess around with and how to remove trim panels, etc. It really isn’t that difficult once you get started. The area under the spoiler is where the antennas are bolted down, and can be prone to “earth” contact corrosion, being frequently and persistently wet.

(You also may not have even noticed that your upper tailgate may have dropped, it’s extremely common, so this is another fix that can be applied at the same time, it takes a bit of “heft” to get the tailgate to where it should be) Thumbs Up “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Tailgate has dropped - which does bug me! So thanks for the tip.

Kot, regarding the above picture with antenna / amp locations, what year is that WSM manual for?

The part descriptions don't quite match what I have in my late 2014/early2015 car. I have the spoiler open at the moment looking at the antenna amps and grounds cause they are corroded badly - and from reading the labels:

For me:

6 - FM2 / DAB antenna amp
7 - Aerial
8 - Aerial
9 - AM/FM

or:

and some of the corrosion I found ... no wonder my radio reception is poor / non existent.

Rolling with laughter

Think I might need some new antenna amps ... which seem nigh impossible to find non-new. Now looking at trying if some jag parts may fit. V8 or else ...

Some serious corrosion, glad you found the fault.

The WS manual is 2016 and I have another that was dated 2014. Both WSM show same pictures and both say 2016 on the top of the page. Here are 2 more pics showing connections in more detail. I have not looked at the 2013-17 manual in the WIKI, but would think its the same.

Yup - the second set of WSM pictures match what I have - so all good.

Yeah, some decent corrision present. The area isn't really doesn't seem that well protected from the elements up there.

I cant seem to find a replacement second hand Land Rover DAB / FM antenna amp (unless ordered from some russian websites, so maybe best avoided Whistle ) ... so I've ordered a jag XF one which seems to have the same fakra connectors, a ground mount and an aerial wire hanging out of it which I'll splice to the existing aerial wires. For £16 its worth a punt if it gets DAB reception back.

If it works out, I'll put a thread up about it all. V8 or else ...

Was going to put this in a different thread, but then thought keep it all together as its all relevant to the original post.

So, I was about to put the spoiler back when I thought why not try a bodge whilst I'm waiting for the Jag part to arrive. I figured, why not just try and plug the aerial wires straight into the co-ax cables that run down to the DAB amp unit. Basically bypassing the amp, whats the worst that could happen.

So. chopped the wires from the aerial ( brown and white ) , unplugged the 2 fakra connectors, then realised that they weren't long enough to reach each other ... leaving me thinking i'll need to make a couple of extensions for the brown and wite wires. oops.

In a moment of genius, I figured i might be able to use the circuit board of the black box and solder on it ... I mean it must be pretty basic inside .... wrong...

This confirmed to me that although the workshop manual circuit diagrams don't seem to specify it ( as far as I have read ), the DAB unit must send up phantom power through the co-ax to power the board.

I also saw 2 bog blobs of solder to use ! So chopped the board ...

2 extension wires taken from a 7 pin trailer cable added

and carefully connected to the existing through artisan twisting of wires and poorly wrapped electrical tape.

And blow me ... it actually kinda works ! I now have reliable BBC DAB ... other channels aren't present, but its a lot better than it was before. Gives me hope that the Jag thing will work now. V8 or else ...

( I'm just dumping info into here so it can be referred to if anyone needs it further down the line )

So the Jag unit arrived. It has a white and black connector on it ... and they are swapped about compared to the white and brown on the LR unit.

So whilst I was trying to guess which way they should be connected up to the RR, it turns out that the FAKRA connectors are supposed to be industry standard colour schemes based on the function they carry out. The colours also each have keyed tabs on them to prevent connecting the wrong colours to each other.

So the jag unit would fit the bill ... black for radio, white for radio with phantom power. But the RR has white and brown. Which according to the table above would be TV2. So the Jag unit is not going to plug straight into the RR. Rolling Eyes ( I'll be cutting the tabs off the jag unit to make it fit though )

It might also explain why Kot's original diagrams posted list the RHS tailgate aerial as radio / TV ... because that is what the colours say they should be. But Land Rover changed it and used the wires for different non-fakra standard purposes.

I thought Lucas wiring was bad ! Rolling with laughter

Edit:

Tabs filed off on the jag unit so that the black connector would fit
. All connected up and it DAB reception is massively improved. So that’s a result. Need to go for a longer drive to see if I get more than just the BBC stuff. V8 or else ...
