2012 Range Rover Autobiography TDV8 Baltic Blue

Unfortunately, when using the car on Tuesday last week it became apparent that the caliper was still causing problems.

Land Rover are £580 for a rear caliper and after market ones are much cheaper but are still the best part of £200. They’re bigger on the 5.0 SC and 4.4 TDV8 then they are on the earlier cars so they seem to be much more expensive.

A quick look on the internet saw that BiggRed do a caliper rebuild kit that was listed as fitting the 5.0 L320 Sport for £40 that included the pistons. I looked up the LR parts catalogue and found that the 5.0 L320 Sport and the L322 use the same rear calipers so I ordered the kit. It arrived next day.

Thankfully when I stripped the old calipers the corrosion that was forming on the side of the piston hadn’t affected the bore of the caliper so a rebuild was very straight forward.

I cleaned the calipers up using a wire brush in the grinder and then used the air line to blow the piston out of the caliper.

I then lubricated the new seals and piston with brake fluid and reassembled with the new dust shield in place.

I then worked the piston in and out with the airline (using a block of wood to stop it coming out too far) and squeezing it back in by hand to make sure it was free to move.

After that, they were given a clean with brake cleaner to remove any grease and then balanced on a broom handle and given a coating of Thunder Grey paint. I gave them 3 coats in the end.

I then refitted them to the car and built them back up.

I tried using a nut and bolt with copper washers to seal the union up whilst the calipers were removed which didn’t work. I also read online that ear plugs work as they swell with the brake fluid but they didn’t work either and the reservoir ended up emptying into the buckets I’d let the flexi’s dangle into.

First up I filled the pressure bleeder with brake fluid and pressured it to 20PSI before opening each rear bleed screw one by one. I got fluid at the wheels but the pedal was awful. I then used the diagnostic machine to bleed the brakes which saw a load of air removed but the pedal wasn’t great still. I then reconnected the pressure bleeder and went around each caliper in sequence twice and that’s now got the brake pedal back to feel perfect. It’s also got nice new brake fluid around the system too as I went through just over 3 litres getting it all bled out properly.

Looking at the colour of what came out it was overdue a change anyway

So, that’s both rear Calipers rebuilt to add to the list of completed jobs now!

All of the parts have arrived to sort the gearbox out now too but I’ve not had time to sort that out.

David, I put the keys in the blue 322 today after it’s been parked for 3-4 maybe even 6 months and I kid you not, it started first piston up! Popped a ctek on it down the back whilst we’re closed for crimbo… 👍

I decided I’d had enough of the festivities today. Cheryl went to meet her pal and her kids at soft play and she took Matthew with her so I had an afternoon to myself. I decided I’d get the dampers and solenoids swapped out in the valve body on the Range Rover gearbox.

I didn‘t take pictures of the removal of the valve body today as it’s exactly the same as the process above when we proved it was a knackered solenoid causing the issues in the first place.

Once the valve body was removed from the car I swapped out the solenoids before starting with the disassembly of the valve body as the ECU has dowels on it that will help align everything upon reassembly so I thought it would be handy to have them done rather then trying to do more with the valve body loosely assembled.

Once the valve body was on the bench with the ECU removed from it, I loosed and removed all of the bolts that hold the two halves of the valve body together. I grabbed this picture before I started lifting screws out so I knew which holes had screws in them.

Once the valve body is split in half, this is what you see:

You can see the 7 dampers in a row at the front of the valve body in this half.

The dampers were all swapped out next. Here’s the old ones next to the installed new ones.

Whilst it was in bits I took the filter out of the valve body and gave it a quick clean. It was spotless when removed thankfully.

After that was done I got the new intermediate plate out of the box.

I then reassembled everything, reinstalled the valve body in the gearbox, then installed a new genuine ZF sump with a new set of bolts which replaced the original one that was missing when I got the car.

After that I filled the gearbox with oil till it was dripping out of the filter plug and reinstalled the fill plug. I then switched the ignition on and cleared the gearbox adaptions. The car was then started and the gearbox was filled until fluid was coming out of the fill plug again. With the IID tool the temperature of the gearbox oil was observed and when it got to 40 degrees the fill plug was removed once more to set the fluid level properly.

I’ve only driven it a couple of miles since doing it but the only way to tell it’s changing gear at the moment is by listening to the engine revs. The box is silky smooth like a hot knife through butter. 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

Done 90 miles in the car now, most of which has been done on A and B roads to afford the car as many opportunities to change gear as possible. The gear change on it is now silky smooth. Since doing this, I’ve not felt a single change, you can hear the engine note change and you can see the revs change, other then that you can’t tell what the car is up to

Really, really happy with how this one is performing now!

Got a work trip to Cheshire in January that I’m going to use this car for so it’ll be a chance to get some decent miles on it.

Thinking my next job might be to integrate Apple CarPlay into the head unit.

This one has settled in remarkably well with nothing felt between any gears and nothing when going from D to R and back again which is quite common on the 6HP26.

The 6HP28 in the 5.0 seems to change gear much quicker then the 6HP26 did in the 4.2 as well. I guess this is down to the totally different valve body between the 2 gearboxes.

Overall, I'm really happy with this one now.

MOT is booked for 9th January so lets wait and see how we get on then!

Just finished reading this thread, very jealous of how handy you are! I've bought an L322 5.0 S/C myself yesterday. The chains are already done on mine, but I think I'm experiencing the same problems with the gearbox as you did.

When I drive at a constant speed of 120km/h (+/- 75 mph) the revs on the dashboard juggle a little bit. I've also experienced a slight hesitation at slow accelerations. It will not always do it, I've experienced this twice now, having driven +/- 300 miles in it so far. Are these the same symptoms you had? '17 Range Rover 5.0 Supercharged AB (Sold)

Mine was hesitating in 3rd gear at around 1500 - 2000rpm when being driven gently. If you gave it more throttle then the hesitation stopped.

My revs were fluctuating by approx 200rpm when sitting on the motorway on cruise control.

Looking at your signature, yours is a 2017 5.0 though which means it’ll be the 8 speed gearbox whereas mine is the 6 speed.

Thanks for the video. I sold my 2017 L405 S/C last year. I'm talking about a 2010 L322 5.0 S/C with the ZF 6 speed gearbox. I'm currently in the process of getting it on the road here in Belgium and will drive more after all of that is sorted. '17 Range Rover 5.0 Supercharged AB (Sold)

Pleased to report that after dropping it off this morning, the RR has sailed through its MOT with no advisories.

Was pretty sure it would pass as I’d given it a good once over but nice to know they’ve not found anything I’d missed!

Intrigued to see the emissions certificate though. Always like to see how cleanly it’s burning fuel.
