2010-2012 sat nav map updates

Hi everyone

Great to see the latest postings here and although I don't follow the technical references to leads and equipment mentioned, it seems as though you are close to finding a solution for updating maps on the 2012 L322 RR etc.. That would be a very welcome outcome and I wish you success in this.

Good Luck Bow down

Thanks Nylands.
Updating earlier and later systems is very straight-forward and I now believe updating our HDD systems is also very straight-forward but requires the temporary use of an external HDD. I'd like to use the correct connector so that anyone can update but my Plan B would be to replace the special socket with a USB socket. FW 6-pin female to USB-A male adapters are readily available but Firewire requires pair A and B to be crossed between the 2 devices which would have been done in the LR lead as is done for all FW device connecting leads (but not extension leads) so a USB-A socket must be appropriately wired.

Thanks GraemeS

So are we saying that the main dealer is now in the position to carry out a current map update for the later L322 models now if we wanted it? I contacted my nearest main dealer two or three years ago for an update but without any interest on their part. Have they caught up then or do you think it's going to have to be a DIY job should you want it?

Thanks

Nothing has changed with regards to dealer updates.

I have no knowledge of what maps are available for the UK but AU "LR" map discs right up to current versions are available but are marketed as only suitable for vehicles that use a DVD map disc, not HDD or USB stick systems. I expect the format of these discs to be useable as it has already been found that the map files themselves didn't change for the HDD systems. However whether or not the security code on a new disc is the same one that the map update function requests is yet to be determined but my costs to get to that point are minimal so worth the attempt.

Making available latest maps on DVDs that can only be used directly on old DVD-based systems suggests to me that there is an expectation that they could be loaded onto a HDD or USB to update those systems. The Australia V26 2020 DVD costs $100 which seems a reasonable compromise between cost and age compared with Australia V27 2021 costing $200 then bigger steps to the later versions, yet retaining use of the inbuilt nav system rather than using another display. If successful then updating to later maps in a few more years for another incremental cost would be an option.

As JAE lists over 650 MX39 part numbers marked to be obsoleted and that the harness connectors are only available fitted to a harness, I'm wondering if JAE made the harnesses themselves and therefore would have made the harness that we require. My inquiry included enough detail for the particular harness to be identified, not that I consdered at the time that JAE might have made them.

No response from JAE yet so probably not going to get one. I'm now looking at the possibility of producing a small adapter pcb to fit inside a USB-A male on a FW/USB adapter at one end and inside the nav connector at the other end to overcome the pin spacing difference and to cross rx/tx too if shown to be needed when my FW lead and USB adapter arrive.

This all sounds exciting and positive.

Is there anything the rest of use can do to help you with this? 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE - 'Black Betty'

I'm at the point of needing an AU/NZ DVD update disc suitable for a 2005-2009 L322 that is later than the 2010 version on my system.

I have a USB+FW external HDD and a copy of the Denso map update program which is stand-alone even though normally invoked from SDD which has prepared the external HDD. I have FW to USB-A connector cabling which has the 4 data wires to the USB-A connector for which I have designed a small link pcb to mate with the satnav's connector which I will have made if I can get the Denso program to load a test map to the HDD.

I recently placed an order for an inexpensive AU/NZ 2016 map set for a 2005-2009 L322 from a site that I've been warned to be cautious trusting, but with no reply from an inquiry sent immediately after placing the order, I doubt that I'll be persuing that source. The order required my vehicle's VIN for which I supplied only the last 6 digits which are outside the serial numbers for 2005-2009 vehicles which may have been an issue or more characters might be required to generate the code, but with no reponse and only bank transfer payment I too am suspicious of the site.

Modify is the wrong word, "would like to modify" is more accurate Smile

The JAE MX USB2 Series of connectors are key, see below, however the Socket Connector and the Relay Connector were only available as a "Harness Product and not sold as an individual connector"

So either the "Straight Pin" or "Angle Pin" might be available as old stock as individual items, Part Number MX39004UQ1 also MX39004NQ1 - but still not all that helpful to us as we need the "Socket Connector" to easily connect into the Head Unit - as shown in the second screen shot below, right hand side of the photo showing the mating of the male & female connectors
