My starter is going south and looking at a genuine Denso 1207 at around £330

Seems silly to buy a new motor when it's just the solenoid, how about this, buy one of the cheaper Denso units and swap the solenoid?

Thoughts?

Good morning Greg,
The difficulty with your plan is in the way the solenoid connections to the terminals are made.
I think they are spot welded and know that they are very fragile and easily broken as you open the solenoid up.
I repaired the one I split by soldering a short length of copper wire before refitting the cap.

I guess that's why these are, for the most part, non-serviceable...

I would normally have a go at this kind of silly £200-odd saving gamble just for the satisfaction factor of fixing something but I am time-poor at the moment so I think I will just bite that bullet...

Prices have gone up since you got your replacement eh?

actually I think my plan was a dud anyway, the 1207 looks quite different....

Sorry Greg, I can’t remember what I paid, but I know I got it from Opie oils when they had a 15% off offer.

A second thought also, size is important., you are only talking mm too big and you won’t get it back through the gap.

Reading up and chatting to a few members, seems like three choices:

1. Remove clean and re-fit
2. Upgrade supply cable
3. Replace starter motor £350

Option 1 sounds sensible but people have said they are hard to take apart.
Option 2 also sounds appealing

Mike did you had to repair yours?

What are people's thoughts pls?

I intended to keep the one I repaired as a spare, but gave it away when I was moving house, because I had already fitted the new one I bought from Opie.

The repair was not difficult, you just have to be careful when removing the solenoid cover.
If I was doing it again I would probably upgrade the 12v trigger wiring at the same time.

In the middle of doing this job at the moment, the 17mm nut that holds the wires onto the starter is a right pain to get too, been at it about 2 hours and can't get it loose

Have even loosened the starter to be able to wiggle it round a bit to get a different angle on it, just can't find anywhere when I can get a good purchase on the socket to be able to get it loose, grrrrr!

How are you doing Greg ?? are you in yet ?

I'm stuck at this bit now - I think I've not got the anti-roll bar as low as I've seen in other pictures, but how?

I tried jacking the car in both access mode and off-road mode but the anti-roll bar seems about the same height both times.

It seems like the higher I jack the car off the ground the low the bar is, but never as low as shown in the pics here, any tips!?

I have only worked on a Td6, so bear with me, one option if it will not 'wiggle out' could be to disconnect the anti roll bar from the drop links, that way you can pull the anti roll bar down, looking at your photo this will probably be enough to get the starter out. However, better advice will probably be along soon from someone who owns a TDV8.

Stupid question time - the "drop link" is the near vertical bar that runs in-front of the drive shafts, right?

Yes, those are the drop links, careful with the washer at the top...

Just be careful not to wreck the rubber covers or you could end up having to replace them, but they are easy and cheap to replace. To remove the end pull the rubber back there should be two flats to fit a spanner on then use a spanner / socket on the retaining nut.
