2012 Range Rover Westminster 4.4 V8 Cairns Blue

Permanent fix for leaking throttle body pipe

Like nearly all 4.4 TDV8 owners the rigid plastic connector to the throttle body is leaking, it’s an awful design from the start and most look like this after several thousand miles

The problem is the seal inside really isn’t upto the job and the fit is so loose it’s comical it ever got past the design stage, I’ve been thinking for a while how to solve this issue and I think I’ve done it, this is my connector 2000 miles after the fix

The fix is so simple and costs under £20 and doesn’t involve PTFE tape, to fix this irritating issue you will need the following

Small flat blade screwdriver
7mm socket
3 75mm int diameter 3mm O Rings

To start remove the rubber intercooler pipe using the 7mm socket
Then undo the clamp on the small pipe top right of the connector and remove the pipe
Next in clip the electrical connector bottom left of the pipe
Finally pull out the metal retaining clip and remove the connector
This is what it looks like inside

The seals are usually misshaped and don’t form a great seal, just in front of the seal is a rigid plastic retaining ring to remove this use the small flat bladed screwdriver to pop the retaining lugs inwards like in the picture below

You can put the rigid retaining ring aside, next get the three 75mm O rings and slide them over the metal throttle body then fit the original seal as below

Finally re fit the rigid plastic part, re connect the plug and pipe and re fit the intercooler pipe, after 2000 miles mine is as clean as the day I did the repair

Hope this helps others if you do a search on eBay you will find the o rings 2012 Range Rover Westminster 4.4 TDV8

I tried a single 3.125" ID x 5mm in the housing but it was too thick so will try a 3.125" x 1/8" next time.

Try the fix above it works 2000 miles later no leaks it’s a simple fix 2012 Range Rover Westminster 4.4 TDV8

Looks good!

The rigid plastic retaining ring that’s popped out. Do you refit that, or leave it out? I suspect it is no longer needed, but want to be sure… Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

Mine's not leaking but I'm looking for an appropriate replacement for the seal in the housing. Loose o-rings on the throttle body don't enthuse me.

Thing is there not loose they wedge up against the slope of the throttle body and up against the lip inside the rigid plastic pipe, absolutely no where to go and an air tight seal this is after 2000 test miles,

Great work. I ended up replacing the hose, the throttle body, the donut hoses and the other pipe with the fragile plastic connector to resolve my intermittent restricted performance. However, when the seal starts to go on the throttle body connector, as it surely will, I’ll do this mod.

Just to add that I recommend the gas specification PTFE tape as a diagnostic step or temporary repair only (considering it costs 50p and you can get some in any hardware store), to confirm if the seal is causing a restricted performance problem or hold out until you can obtain a new part, not as a permanent repair.

Incidentally however, my 'temporary' repair has now been in place for thousands of miles. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

ordered the orings.

id recommend doing it early before the leak absolutely wrecks the boost control solenoid just under it and to the right. Its actually a sport

Did mine with 0 rings and PTFE as it was leaking a bit. Pretty sure it's made an improvement to drivability and the harsh 1-2 shift is now not noticable. Cant remember how many rings I used but it took considerable force to get the retaining ring to engage and it then became solidly fixed. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Just completed this and now have a movement free joint between the plastic intake and throttle body so assume it’ll be leak free, but I’ll check for any oily mess escaping after a few journeys.

A couple of things from me, I needed four o rings rather than three to get a firm seal, I also found I needed to bend the spring clip into a tighter circle before refitting to get it to ‘spring’ into place in the groove and hold the plastic intake firmly.

I also have 6 o rings left over that I’’m happy to post to someone if they want to try this mod out themselves 👍 Jonathan
