Testing viscous fan

I think mine is fubar but if anyone else can do some checks for me I would really appreciate it.

Fan makes a loud clicking noise on start up and has lost its loud howl on start up as well,

If I spin the fan when cold it will not free wheel but is stiff then less stiff then stiff etc

After getting upto temp if I turn off it wi turn but not free wheel and definitely not locked

With AC on it would definitely engage after a while at idle but I’ve not noticed it

If anyone with the 4.4 TDV8 could do the following for me I’d really appreciate it before I order a replacement

.1. Test when cold does it spin freely etc

.2. Test when hot will it turn or is it locked up

Thanks in advance 2012 Range Rover Westminster 4.4 TDV8

Doesn't spin free when cold on mine. Definitely feels like it's connected to something with 'drag' 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

You are aware that the engine cooling fan is electrically controlled with a variable lockup clutch controlled by a PWM signal, aren't you? the checks above won't really tell you much about the correct operation of it.

ETA:
From Topix
Quote:
For additional airflow through the radiator matrix, particularly when the vehicle is stationary or slow moving,
there is an engine driven electro-viscous unit. This unit functions as a normal viscous fan, but with electronic
control over the level of engagement of the viscous clutch. The Engine Control Module (ECM), which
determines the required fan speed, controls the level of clutch engagement. The ECM determines engagement
based on the coolant, ambient and transmission oil temperatures and Air Conditioning (AC) system pressure.
The fan is mounted using a Left Hand (LH) thread.

The viscous fan unit is electronically controlled by the ECM to optimise fan speed for all operating conditions.

• NOTE: If the electrical connections to the viscous fan are disconnected the fan will 'idle' and overheating may
result. The ECM stores the appropriate fault codes in this case. A 'check engine light' will also be displayed in
the instrument cluster.

The fact that it makes a loud clicking sound would be enough for me know something is very wrong without any other tests. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

2012 tdv8 doesn't have a separate fan for the AC it got a electric clutch in it for the AC 2012 Range Rover Westminster 4.4 TDV8

Mine isn't a TDV8 but a 4.2 Supercharged. I also had a problem where the viscous fan made a loud metalic clicking noise when cold, it worked otherwise and cooled the car properly. I bought a new viscous fan as the noise became annoying.
