United Kingdom 2012 Range Rover Westminster TDV8 Santorini Black

Was up there last week in mine and had the same after crawling up the kirkstone pass at 2500rpm which it seems to love to do for some reason Laughing

I can't be sure if mine is oil or coolant but the cooler has been done on mine and still smells hot all the time

Perhaps I should add it’s a 4.4tdv8.

BTW your car seems to be a 2015 L405? This sub section is for the earlier L322.

Well spotted that man! I need to update that. Didn’t really get on with the L405 so went back to a L322.

Have you had anybody take a look at it?

Many years back I had a 5 series with the ZF 6 speed. While at a zoo with the drive around “safari” section I was crawling with the rest of the cars and after a while i had a horrible smell in the car.

It was like rotten eggs, and later put it down to cooking the torque converter due to the slow speeds and inclines.

Given the first post describes lots of hills and slowness, is it possible the smell is the gearbox working too hot? Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

If you are revving over 2500 rpm the 2nd turbo will kick in and if it’s not had the drain mod it will burn oil in the exhaust. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

It just smells hot! Possibly slightly oily. It just seems hotter than it should be for the small amount of hard work it’s done.

Nope... We did a run up to Oxford from Cornwall a couple of weeks ago. About 3/4hr into the journey I stopped off to grab some diesel. When I pulled up at the pumps I had a faint cloud of smoke emanating out from under the bonnet. By the time I realised what was going on I flipped the bonnet to get out and check, but it had almost dissipated. From the brief glimpse I did get it seemed to be coming from the back of the engine, I presume it must be something dripping onto the exhaust??
I just carried on with the journey with no problems.
I dropped it down to my local indy a few days after. He had a good look around and said all the usual suspect places seemed fine and everything seemed dry.
The RR is a second car so it sits around for weeks. I will try and make an effort to get out this weekend and have a better look.

That does sound like oil cooler gaskets or the O rings leaking oil into the V but you've had a specialist check it who should know what to be looking for.
Engine cover off, pollen box off (2 x nuts), grab a small step and then peer down into V at rear and look for leaks around the cooler (sits under the oil filter). Look under the car too for oil on the bellhousing circular cross member. Even better if with engine undertray removed - oil can collect on it.
If you were nearer me I'd happily check it...If I'd have known I could have done it when I was down in Fowey last month Wink
Who is your specialist? Mark Kelly in Tavistock is good I hear.
I know of JLR Services, Shaun King, Trevecca, Steve Toyer Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

Started to strip the manifold on top of mine this eve for a better look and spotted this underneath the oil cooler which was a shame considering I have an invoice for a replacement oil cooler not that long ago by the previous owner. Feed pipe on the back is dry. Is there anything else I should be checking around there that could be causing the smoking or is it pretty certain it's cooler related?

Not wishing to hijack this post but thought the pictures could be useful for the OP.

Finally, found a decent independent that actually wanted to help me sort this problem out. Transpires the issue of the oil mist was the oil cooler gasket leaking. The 'hot' smell turned out to be a seized rear caliper.
So, 4 new discs, 2 sets of pads, two new rear calipers and the oil coiler gasket and she seems as good as new now, well other than a sticky starter motor that on occasions seems to want to stick. Guess that will be the next job...

Good news! Looks like both collective suggestions were correct = caliper and cooler. Hive mind power Bow down

Josh & Clive @ LRD Southwest Ltd. Only a fairly small outfit but with a great levels of service.

Out of interest, was the starter motor replacement a big job?
