My 2005 4.2 Supercharged - here we go....

So, after selling my 2010 3.6 TDv8 in February I started looking for a 4.4 TDv8 Westminster .... and like you do, ended up buying this 2005 (2006) model 4.2 Supercharged on Good Friday Laughing

After a lot of thought I just couldn't justify spending upwards of £15000, at the time, for a decent 4.4 with the mileage and colour/trim I wanted. I work from home and it would only be used occasionally for holidays in the UK. So... I'd always fancied a Supercharged and began to look. The 5.0 was out of my budget and after dismissing a few 4.2's bought this one. 80k miles, Full History (last 4 at Land Rover Dealers and before that at the same Indy since it was purchased from the dealer in Sheffield)

As you'd imagine there's a few things to do but it drives well. I've now serviced the diff's and transfer box which I'll write up in a guide for others. I'll also add to this post on my progress.

I must say a massive thanks to David Hallworth for his 'Back with another Supercharged' https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic57991.html posts on his Supercharged. I've been reading it since Jan '21 and it's been a great read and helped me out no end.

Yes, my previous two RR's were black and I really wanted silver (Zambezi Silver) in this case.

Lets see how it pans out but I think it'll be an interesting journey which may help others on the way Thumbs Up Gavin

Front Diff Oil Change

Mr Glover - Yep, a little but as expected and very fixable.

So last night I changed the oil in the Front Diff.

Oils from Smith & Allan who I have used for years on my cars with no problems. I bought 5 litres of the corresponding specification Diff oil so I could do front and rear diff's (non electric rear) again in a few hundred miles and I'm glad I did looking at what came out of the Rear Diff...but that's another write up... Shocked

Front Diff Capacity from 'wet' s 0.75 litres. Its up on ramps and this doesn't affect the filling as its an amount of oil and not 'to the filler until it dribbles out'...

Slacken the Filler first otherwise you'll be stuffed if you drain the diff first and can't get any back in as it won't budge.

This is what came out - Just about 0.70 litres of dark smelly well used Diff Oil -

No metals in it although it did have a 'silvery tinge' if that makes sense and boy did it stink of cats wee Laughing

I think the Magnet did it's job...sludge and filings...

Clean it up and screw it back in

Measured 0.75litres of Diff Oil out..

...and transferred to the Draper Pump - handy little thing and works well. Draper was showing just over .80 litres in its bottle but I can live with that and didn't use about 0.05 litres, so worked out fine in the end.This isn't a F1 car after all -

Screwed the Filler plug in after cleaning it up. Its a tapered thread - don't over tighten it as the case of the Diff is surprisingly thin.

It’s very common for the oil that comes out of the rear diff to be horrible stuff.

I’ve got Smith & Allen engine oil and gearbox oil in mine Smile Have used them a lot and never had any problems with any of it.

Rear Diff Oil Change -

The remains of the Filler Plug... no way could I get this out. I tried an over size star drive, heat and even to tried to cut a little slot for a screwdriver but my Dremel disc was too big. This might explain the colour/condition of what came out... had it ever been changed in 80,000 miles ...?

So the only way to fill this up would be via the breather hose. I slipped it off -

and undid the drain plug - again another 14mm Hex Head.

Some filings on the plug but surprisingly not to bad...Just over a litre came out and I left it to drain for a good 30 minutes whilst tea and biscuits were taken -

Screwed back in and then measured out the first of many Syringe amounts to make up 1.2 Litres. Painful as the hose attached to the syringe has a small bore and requires a lot of pressure to transfer to the diff via the Breather fitment on the diff.

Took around 30 minutes to get it all in. Fitted the breather hose back onto the Diff and job done.

Transfer Case next....which should be easier ....there, I've said it. Gavin

Nice looking Supercharged Superspoons, they do scrub up well.
Its handy to see yours with the side rubbing strips on the doors, did you fit them?.
I bought a Land Rover set off e-bay waiting for the warmer weather to fit them.
Might see you around im in Herts as well.

when i do mine i cover the hole of the filler plug and drain plugs with a very thick water pump grease all over the plug you have to use a small scraper blade to put it on so it is sealed . it stays on very well and then just wipe off the next time no rust like new new vehicle purchase

Hi Peter - Thanks. No they were on there when I bought it. I'm in two minds what to do. They do protect the doors from damage, but the adhesive is failing in a couple of places. The worry is they take off some of the lacquer or worse if I removed them. Im up Knebworth way. Gavin

Yes, just needed to get it out the first place. I've put an amount of mastic in filler plug heads before and that works well too Thumbs Up Gavin

Hi Superspoons,
If you do decide to remove them Id boil a kettle of water and gently pour the water over it as you peel it off.
Im still in two minds to fit or not to fit my set.

Transfer Box oil change

Transfer box oil change -

1.5 litres required. Again I used Smith & Allan for the oil that meets the required Specification and ordered 2 x 1 Litres bottles. Mine needs 1.5 Litres according to the manual for a 'wet fill' -

Undid the filler after cleaning around the area -

I'd ordered a new one anyway (old one outside the packet, new inside Laughing ) -

Undid the drain plug which was in good condition -





..and drained the oil -

Fitted the Drain plug after cleaning it up and replaced the cooper washer on it with a new one.

Used my Draper pump bottle to fill it up with 1 litre first and pumped it in. The remaining 0.5 litre followed -

Just shy of 1.5 litres went in - it started to dribble out of the Filler plug so put the new one in and nipped it up.
