2007 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Stornoway Grey

How'd you bleed the brakes David?

I have one of those hand pump things to suck the stuff out at the bleed nipple and I've added a 12v electric pump to it. Not used it on the RR yet, but I have on my bikes. It works well and I'm tempted to upgrade to a proper tool rather than a cheap ali express one.

2012 Range Rover Autobiography TDV8 Baltic Blue

I sat my Dad in the car and put him up in the air on the ramp. I then used the IID tool and followed the instructions on which caliper to bleed and when. It was running the pump on the ABS block too whilst Dad was pumping the pedal.

The instructions on the IID tool said open the bleed nipple on the caliper and pump the brake pedal and it had a timer counting down. Strange when it went past 0 and started counting - numbers though.

The sequence on the IID tool is different from the one in the workshop manual so once the IID tool had finished I went around the car again and did them all manually according to the manual just to be sure.

I had the front wheels on when I was using the IID tool and through the spokes on the wheels I could only access the front bleed screws on the front Brembo calipers so when I did it manually I did the rear half too. Amazing how much air is in the back half of the caliper when the front half is bled!

Pedal feels lovely and solid on it now.

We've got a EasyBleed thing that you connect to the air line in the workshop and it sucks the fluid through but we've never had much luck with it. I saw an Atlantic British video where they used a device to pressurise the reservoir and bled it from the calipers that way which seemed to work great but I decided to work with what I had this time.

This is an epic thread, I'm really enjoying following your rebuild, you've certainly given that Fatty a new lease of life.

Have you had a search around eBay for the water pump and hose, sometimes I've been lucky on there and found dealers selling new old stock.

The genuine pumps are available from LR they’re just on back order briefly. Duckworths can supply them aftermarket immediately.

The hose that’s obsolete I can’t find anywhere.

I stripped mine to find I don’t need either thankfully. I’ve ordered 2 of the smaller pipes to take the seal from one and replace one whilst it’s out as they’re a to get to.

Just need my brake pipes to arrive and we should be MOT and tracking ready! 🤞

Another curve ball today…

Setting the handbrake up. Manual says tension shoes till discs can’t be rotated and back the adjuster off 8 clicks.

No problem… passengers side done with no issues. Drivers side there was a loud Twang and the adjuster disappeared.

Stripped it down to find this…

The spring had lost its shape and pinged out of the shoes.

Stripped both sides down, threw all 4 new springs in the bin and refitted the original LR ones. Handbrake now tensioned and working as it should.

Waste of an hour.

New rear brake Flexi's arrived yesterday and were fitted yesterday evening before the brakes were bled out again. Pleased to report no leaks and the pedal feels nice and solid.

Both propshafts are also refitted, annoyingly I removed the front one when the diff had been removed so I had to remove the cradle from under the transfer box to refit it. Thankfully it's 4 bolts and then the big bolt that goes through the transfer box mount.

The heater pipe I'm waiting for will hopefully be delivered either today or tomorrow so I can reinstate the cooling system.

Tonights job is to get the heat shields back on underneath it and then refit the exhaust. The exhaust is the only cumbersome bit that I need a hand to lift at the moment. It's one piece from front to rear and is very heavy.

Once the exhaust is fitted I can potter away at finishing it off on my own which is handy as my folks are going away for a few days next week.

Productive night again tonight.

The old clips that hold the cover over the brake lines weren’t grabbing the studs properly when going back on.

4 clips from LR were going to be in the region of £20-25 so a little bit of time this evening saw that sorted for no more then 1 hour of my time

I had some Nylon rod in the workshop so I grabbed it and mounted it in the lathe.

I turned it down to the same diameter as the flat bit on the old stud and then drilled a 4mm hole right down the middle of it.

After doing that I turned the end of the rod down to the same diameter as the narrowest bit on the old fastening.

I then used the parting off tool and split the new fastener from the bar.

I then got a knackered T40 torx bit, heated it with the induction heater and placed it onto the head of my fastener.

I then gave it a clean up with a file to get rid of the melted plastic and repeated the process 3 more times.

The brake pipe cover is now back firmly in place using the new clips I made.

As well as that, the new heater valve arrived yesterday and the 2 coolant pipes I was waiting for arrived today so the cooling system is now reinstated. By the time I’d finished it was 21:30 so filling and bleeding the system is a job that can wait for tomorrow evening.

Excellent work David.

What tool did you use to cut the plastic? I've heard that HSS is best but I've mainly used carbide inserts with good success.

It was a tool with a removable tip. The tip that was on it was carbide.

With plastic I don’t think it really matters too much as it’s an easy enough material to work.

Bit more tinkering tonight…

Exhaust refitted. This is an awkward 2 man job as it’s one piece from the front to the back.

Then got it back on all 4 wheels for the first time in a while.

Then we flicked the key and she burst into life

Sat idling on the ramp for a good 40 minutes whilst I made sure there were no air locks in the cooling system.

I then went over the rear suspension and found an air leak where the air pipe goes into the union on the air bag. 😩

Annoyingly, to sort the leak I had to remove the wheel, depressurise the suspension, and then remove the air bag as there’s just no way to get a spanner, crow foot or anything near that union to tighten it.

Thankfully, the union just seemed to need nipping up so I snugged it up, refitted the bag, put the wheel back on and put the suspension up to full height again. Another quick scoosh of leak detector spray and no leaks were visible thankfully.

I’ve left it on full height tonight with the battery disconnected so if it’s sitting level in the morning then I’d say it’s a good job done. After all the work it’s had done to it, one leak from an air spring is something I’ll settle for.
