Time for a bit of chillaxing while you wait for the bits to arrive. You'll probably find something to do on your soon to be perfect SC though.šŸ˜‰ Previous cars:
S-Max 2007-2013 (only diesel I've had, good car but expensive when diesely bits go wrong, so what's the point?)
Galaxy 2001-2007
Mondeo Estate 1997-2001
Sierra Estate 1993-1997
Uno Turbo 1987 -1993
Fiesta 1984 - 1987
Fiat 127 1982 - 1984

Yep, I'll likely install the wiring loom for the deployable steps if the parts don't turn up Smile

Fuel tank guards finished off this evening.

Decided against riveting it again as the others had turned to powder. Instead, I used M6 stainless nuts and bolts this time around. Probably a bit pointless as the previous rivets were 15 years old right enough.

Does anybody remember the film Billy Madison with Adam Sandler?

Picture his look when heā€™s opening his mailbox to find his nudie magazine.

I think thatā€™s how I looked when I was told there was a delivery sitting at my folks front doorā€¦

Excitement began to build at this pointā€¦

After unpacking and unwrapping I was smitten to see theseā€¦

Just a shame when theyā€™re fitted youā€™ll never be able to see themā€¦ just like everything else Iā€™ve done to this car! šŸ™ˆ

Big thanks to Piet who adverised the tools to remove the crankshaft pulley and a set of timing tools for the 4.2 today which will shortly be arriving Very Happy Must resist the urge to ā€Just fit themā€ whilst the car is on the ramp. šŸ™„

Thanks Piet Smile

Happy days! DPD have been!

Hereā€™s the old bracket with the old bolts. Pretty evident why I wanted to change them!

The old bolts werenā€™t going to grip with anything so I cut a slot in them with the angle grinder and removed them very easily with a flat blade screwdriver.

Sensors mounted to new brackets with new stainless self tapping screws.

Irritatingly the parts catalogue lists the wrongs screws for mounting the height sensors to the brackets but I had some that have done the job Smile

Everything back in situ.

Iā€™d bought new unions and olives where the air pipes go into the bags. When Iā€™d removed them I wasnā€™t happy as the pipes were bruised where the olives had been. Due to a slightly bulge in the pipe behind the union I couldnā€™t trim them either so Iā€™ve cut the ends off the pipes and joined them this afternoon.

Subframe is now finished other then the anti roll bar which Iā€™ll refit when itā€™s on the car due to the weight making it more awkward. Zip ties are holding the wishbones together so that thereā€™s more clearance for refitting and to stop it stretching the airbag.

I then wheeled it on the toolbox to the front of the shed where I lifted the frame in the air with the digger and placed the diff on the toolbox.

I then lowered the frame onto the diff.

And then fitted the bolts through the new bushes into the diff.

Iā€™ve got a few other things I could do with looking at just now so I think Iā€™m going to leave refitting this back to the car until tomorrow.

Thanks Philip.

Just going through my old photoā€™s. Hereā€™s a before, during and after of the subframe.

Before:

During:

After:

By tomorrow evening, the list of work done only to the rear will be:

Painted the whole assembly with Bilt Hamber Epoxy Mastic.

Fitted 21 new bushes - 4 main subframe bushes, 4 upper wishbone bushes, 4 lower wishbone bushes, 2 toe control arm bushes and 3 differential bushes, and 2 bushes in each hub which arenā€™t pictured yet.

Fitted 2 new toe control ball joints on the arms.

Fitted 2 new wheel bearings,

Fitted new brackets to the height sensors on the rear suspension.

Replaced sections of air suspension pipework.

Fitted 2 new handbrake cables.

Fitted new brake disc back plates.

Fitted new handbrake shoes and springs.

Fitted new sliders to rear calipers.

Fitted EBC Greenstuff rear pads.

Wire brushed, treated and painted rear brake calipers.

Wire brushed, rust treated, zinc painted and epoxy mastic painted the underside of the car.

Wire brushed, rust treated and painted rear driveshafts.

Wire brushed, rust treated and painted anti roll bar and brackets.

Removed, wire brushed, rust treated, painted and refitted fuel tank guards.

Rear airbags and shock absorbers have only been on the car since November and have done around 1000 miles.

When you see the list it doesnā€™t sound like a lot but at the moment it feels like itā€™s been a labour of love!

Subframe is now back in Smile

This is how she was sitting in the workshop earlierā€¦

Unfortunately, itā€™s not quite as far on as the pictures would suggestā€¦

The workshop manual says to tighten the upper and lower wishbone bolts with the car at normal ride height. However, it also says that to do the upper wishbone bolts you need to drop the subframe.

I noticed when remounting the subframe earlier that if I left the driveshafts out I could reach the nuts and bolts with a spanner and the torque wrench so I loosely fitted the hubs, fitted the wheels, torqued the bolts and then removed the wheels and put it back on axle stands.

Tomorrow evening Iā€™m going to rebuild the hubs, and get everything back together.

Have come up with a plan so that I can get things aligned as best I can before taking it in for tracking too.

If you saw my parts bill youā€™d maybe not be asking! Iā€™ll post a breakdown when Iā€™m finished but Iā€™m about Ā£3K in 2 months, if I include the air springs, and shock absorbers I did in November itā€™s cost me Ā£4K for the full suspension rebuild.

Iā€™m really hoping it drives like a new L322 would have done when itā€™s finished!

Rear anti roll bar was painted on Sunday and refitted tonight along with new drop links. Irritatingly, despite it being very simple to fit it required removing one of the air springs as it curves around them. Not a massive job thankfully.

Rear drive shafts are now both installed. Interestingly the workshop manual states to plaster the splines of the driveshafts with Loctite to stop the splines moving in the diff and to leave it for at least 24hrs before moving it. No problems there for me then Very Happy

Rear hubs were then installed and the handbrake shoes built back up.

I couldnā€™t remember which side the bolt faces on the toe control arms so eye balled the underside of the other L322 this evening and got them back in too.

Itā€™s booked in for a full 4 wheel alignment on Tuesday with the local JLR specialist so Iā€™ve got a firm deadline to get it mobile again now!

Yea, Iā€™ve done all of my bushes with the stuff and it looks like Iā€™ve barely used any out of the bottle.

When I went into the shed today there was a puddle of coolant on the workshop floor. šŸ˜©

Had a quick look earlier and initially I thought it was coming from the heater control valve.

However, looking closer tonight it looks like it might be the water pump that lives underneath the heater valve or one of the hoses connected to it.

Unfortunately, itā€™s a sod to get to as it hides behind a heat shield right beside the NS valve cover which has an air con pipe running right beside it.

Iā€™ll get the brakes bled out tomorrow evening and will then get the car started and pressurise the cooling system in the hope I can see where the leak is.

With it being a bank holiday weekend I was going to order the 3 parts... 2 hoses and 1 pump just to change the lot out so I can get it back on the road next week...

Unfortunately one of the hoses is obsolete, and the pump is on back order šŸ˜«

Looks like I'll be stripping it down to try and find out what's leaking before ordering anything now.

Today saw the brakes bled, both diffs filled with oil and the transfer box oil changed again after 4k miles since the brand new transfer box went in last summer. Quite pleased I changed it as it was massively darker despite only being 8 months old.

The brakes bled very nicely with the pedal feeling great. What is incredibly irritating is I never noticed that the rear Flexi is bruised before I bled them out. It looks new so I can only assume I've caught it on something Censored

Anyway, 2 new brake Flexi's have been ordered this evening so hopefully we'll see them this week.
