4.4 TDv8 coolant leak- plastic connection?

Got a coolant leak which looks to be coming from the left hand coolant pipe that goes to a plastic manifold at the top of the V, the left pipe that comes from the bottom.

I’m not sure if it’s the plastic connection or the plastic manifold it goes into that’s leaking, I’m not pulling it apart yet as the dealers are closed until 11th May so I can’t get parts anyway.

Has anyone got any advice or experience of the same leak?
Thanks in advance

The hose you refer to comes from the bottom of the radiator and feeds onto the thermostat housing beyond the silver clip. That clip may have lost tension and allowed the pipe to move back a little. Inside the connector is an o-ring. It's a similar set up to the throttle body inlet connector and there has been at least one occurence of that particular clip allowing such a faillure, albeit in the air inlet.

Have a look at the workshop manual in the Wiki and you'll see the general set up in the engine cooling descriptions. There are several o-rings that could account for your problem. Also look at the Advanced Factors (site sponsor) site for some fair exploded diagrams. AF are still open and if you ring you may get to Paul who can advise you on what is available and he may also have a good idea of what may cause your leak. If you get an engaged tone or answer macine, keep trying, he's quite busy but very helpful. You may then be able to source what you need to fix having torn it down to find the leak.

If you do strip down to the thermostat, you'll need to take off the donut and pipes, so be careful of the small connectors on the upper radiator hose. Some o-rings and pipe connectors are integral to the pipes and are not available seperately from suppliers, but you may be able to measure and source from elsewhere if you search online.

Hope this helps. Cheers
Richard

Thanks - I’ll search wiki

I’ll strip and have a look, hopefully just an o ring then, does it self bleed?

Anti roll bar drop down links done, front disks and pads next might go textar.

Richard, if they are the same size as the connector on the oil cooler, then they are.....

I don’t know why my picture rotate- it’s the water pipe below the yellow cable, I do think it’s this plastic connector.

I think the o-ring in the pipe with that clip only comes as part of the hose itself. That's one of the o-rings you may be able to source from the 'net.

Mike

Those o-rings- are they from the cooler on the EGR/cooler assembly?

If so defo not large enough for the lower rad hose to thermostat (I think) Cheers

Mike (Baltic Blue)

Just checked on my spare that I purchased when I broke Rolling Eyes the small top connection and the o-ring is

40mm ID by 4mm diameter

assuming the two connections to the thermostat housing are the same size. They look to be. Cheers

Hi chaps, just dragging up an older post but I seem to have a coolant leak in exactly the same place and have some crystallisation around the end of the hose.

So far it looks like it might just be the o-ring but as per this thread the dealers don't sell it. Just wanted to confirm that I should be sourcing a 40mm x 4mm o ring for this part, is that correct?

Any help is much appreciated.

Nick, did you find out the correct size for the o-ring in that hose in the end? I think we have exactly the same leak and wanted to pick one up before I jumped in. Looks allot easier to change the o-ring than the hose.

Hi Tom,

I went with the previous post and ordered a 40 x 4 mm one to save the £104 for the pipe! I went to fit the o-ring and one of the tubes connected at the top of the pipe snapped off so had to order the whole new pipe. Managed to get a good deal on one though and to be honest fitting the new pipe wasn’t a problem at all. I did a coolant change and that was more of a pain removing the wheel arch liner etc but well worth the effort. Never owned and engine of this size before, it’s holds a lot of coolant!

I still have the old pipe so can check tomorrow to see if it fits and get back to you no problem.

The new pipe didn’t have an o-ring as I think of it but what looked like a integrated silicone seal if that makes sense? you couldn’t pull it out. I might be wrong but if you’re I. There you light as well get it off and give it a good clean etc. When I investigated mine to find the leak I ‘disturbed’ it and it started leaking more so be prepared!

Hi Tom,

Here are some pics for you.

The first is the old pipe without an o-ring in it and the second is the same pipe with the o-ring seated in it. I'm no expert but the seal isn't sat in the same place as the clear silicone seal I mentioned in my previous post so can't guarantee it will work.

I've had similar connections on a BMW 5 Series before and if they aren't seated correctly they will leak or blow off. When I put the new pip on and put this end on it fit like a glove and felt like it had docked!!

Give it a whirl but for piece of mind I would but the top hose.

Would love to hear how you get on. 2012 TDV8 Santorini Black Westminster

I've got all mine stripped down today, doing pulleys, alternator and water pump,
I've already replaced the top radiator hose, right side, because it was leaking at the end joint.
I've been contemplating on changing the left one that you guys are on about, but as far as I can find out it is part of an assembly of pipes described as the 'bottom hose'.
Can you guys look at LR022661 and tell me if you have to buy the whole assembly or is there a part number for the end connection that is leaking?
Thanks Kev.

Hi Kev,

Sounds like the right time to just crack on and do it while you have it all stripped down. To be honest i got very confused by it all as I saw reference to the 'bottom' hose but it comes out the top of the rad!!

The part I replaced is what the Americans call a goose neck due tot he kink in it but the part number is LR029140LR 2012 TDV8 Santorini Black Westminster

Thanks Nick,
I've ordered the complete hose assembly and it's coming Friday fingers crossed. Bloody expensive at £252 though.
I never want to take the radiator shroud or COSV valve off again!!
I've spent over £1200 on the front of the engine so far. Big Cry

No problem Kevin!

Ouch that has to hurt, but then there aren’t small little 1.2 engines haha.

Hope I don’t have to delve into the COSV valve! Best of luck getting it all back together. 2012 TDV8 Santorini Black Westminster
