I replaced the starter on our 4.4 TDV8 almost 2 years ago now.

All I needed to remove was the undertray. The starter motor came out between the gaps in the tubular subframe. I didn’t need to remove a wheel, arch liner or anything else. You do need to be able to get under the car to do it that way though.

I reckon it took me 30 mins to get it out including removing the undertray and probably about the same to put it back on.

One of the easiest jobs I’ve ever done on the Full Fat.

Mine's just started playing up so I've been looking to get it replaced. Is there a reason why everyone is going for the Denso replacement rather than the oem product? Is it just price?

My local indy only wants to use a LR starter. Given mine has already had one starter replaced, I'm not particularly enthusiastic especially as it's priced at over £400. 2010 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE

The original factory fit one was a Denso as far as I’m aware.

When ours failed the LR supplied one that I removed was a Denso and the one I fitted from Euro Car Parts was a Denso.

Euro Car Parts had the Denso one in stock at our local branch when I ordered ours so they obviously get through enough of them.

my experience with this issue has been..... bought car, at 196k, and discovered the intermittent starting issue.. tiny click, and no 'clunk' or whirr. removed starter, teasing it out to the side, past the roll bar, with wheel hanging down..with I think solenoid facing front of car, as not coming out other way... dismantled solenoid, and saw very black terminals... filed them, and reassembled. went first time... and may more times, all ok.... thought it was ok, as had no more no-starts.... until about a week ago, (199k) got an odd no-start... but couldn't be sure it was me not timing my finger press correctly.... and then next day, the worst ever one. -took an hour and half to eventually go again, fortunately at a petrol pump, at 1am, so no holding up etc... got under, and tapped it a good few times, just incase, with wheel brace, then large hammer, leant to me... wasn't having it.... so a short snooze, and then tried it. (1.5hrs!) it eventually went, and as id guessed this might happen, and wanted to prove the fact, seemed like it occurs when car is quite warm, and you return to car within 10 mins of leaving it... So, I bought a secondhand starter, just so I could prove the issue, then I would/will invest the £400 for a new one. -only £35 so worth a gamble.. its been on a few days, and issue has gone away. (for now!).

I have pre-emptively installed a motor bike starter relay at the starter solenoid to power the starter solenoid from the main battery cable, using the solenoid trigger wire to trigger the motor bike relay. The solenoid now very positively closes its contacts and the starter jumps to life starting the engine immediately. Mitsubishi Electrics fits the extra relay to its after market truck starter motors to ensure that the solenoids get full voltage so that the life of the solenoids isn't compromised by poor vehicle wiring. Our vehicles have poor wiring for the solenoid, being very undersized for the current draw for the wire length.

Whilst my starting has greatly improved and many gremlin solved with wiring work and new relays I feel the solonoid contact can be further improved specially with battery voltage on the low side (still havent fixed the parasytic drain)

What is a good brand setup you would recommend? also where did you pick up the signal?

I have experienced the same issue and had put it down to low SOC (drain) and a heat soaked starter solenoid not making adequate contact. I feel the next logical step would be to add Grame's Mod and go from there SOLD | Tuned MY 2011.5 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 TDV8 Orkney Grey | e-diff | ACC
