RIP TDV8

Hi All,
After completely loving everything about the TDV8

I am now in fear that the Range Rover will join a very small list, currently of just 1, of vehicles I’ve owned but would never buy again Sad . The other being a Buell Ulysses.
Like the Buell, a year of loving the Range Rover has been outweighed by the unreliability & inconvenience of owning it.
Now, after 6 weeks without the car, of diagnostics, research, and seeking a garage to replace the faulty turbo(s), only one out of 5 independent Land Rover workshops has quoted. And at £4200 to replace the turbos, plus any ancillary work & transporting the stricken vehicle, it would appear it’s next owner will be the dismantler Sad .

That’s not good mate. Mine is the longest I’ve kept a car. They are cracking motors… when they are working….

It’s difficult to know what to do in your situation… you could get a whole TD6 for £4200…. And it’s not likely you will recover the cost afterwards if you sell it. If you fix it, and still have faith in it, and you keep it a few years, it evens the cost out a bit… but I recon we both know where you are with that option… you’ve had enough of it now… fair comment.

I think mine has cost me the most this year, and I’ve done the least miles… 800 odd… but it’s still needed new battery…. Side steps… rear adaptive dampers, service… road tax… rear brake pipes… master cylinder…. Brake dust shield… must be about £3k….

Thanks Mate,

I needed (need !) a comfortable towing car for use on longer drives (200+mls) not for daily about town driving, and it was GREAT !
Been struggling to find something to give the same towing performance, driving experience, comfort, and “presence” on the road.
It may Possibly be a Ford F-150, who knows …

Feel for you, and it looks like a nice one, but...... you'll get what for it, £2k maybe, so what can you get for circa £6200 plus bits?? F150s are junk. Lightenings too. OK probably reliable but no comfort, quality (actual or perceived feeling of) or that incredible presence.

But I've never been bent over by a ffrr, so what do I know!! I've undoubtedly got that to look forward to and these days haven't got the dosh to cover it. I' m handy-ish with spanners though.

Chris

As above is it the 3.6 or 4.4
If it’s just the turbos I would be inclined to change them out you’ve said your self your towing finding a replacement.

From my own experience with our 4.4 if they are not kept in top form they can run into money pits but can also be brought back to a high level of maintenance.

Ours cosmetically was brilliant but obviously that’s all the previous owner could afford to do leaving the mechanical side without.
In our first year of owner shop I must have spent near 4k in parts alone with me working on the car so no labour charge and I’m at a point now where I would happily drive any where.

It’s a 3.6 if I remember right, from previous posts.

Indeed it is the 3.6 TDV8
For “swapping out” the turbos quotes are £4K+
I do not have a pit or a 4 post lift, otherwise I may be tempted myself.
Unfortunately it is not only my direct experience of this car with good service history which I have also paid thru the noise to keep up, but also seeing another RR a the only other broken down vehicle on our fateful trip, and yet another as the only stricken one on the motorway on a trip to Duxford Sad.
It seems doesn’t matter how you maintain, or what you spend, they can still find a way to bike you in the arse !

When I was shopping for an L322 I was looking at 3.6 vs 4.4 and worked out I needed a £5k contingency fund for turbo replacement on the 3.6 and the numbers just didn't add up. Depending on how much life there is in the rest of the car, how long you want to keep it and the state of the used car market it still 'may' be worthwhile fixing it? 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I admire your positivity.
And although the rest of the motor is pristine, and I’m looking for a long term vehicle, It simply makes no sense to me to thro £4K+ at a motor that may well fail in another area a few months down the line.
The lesson I’ve learned was eloquently put by my wife….
If you can’t afford a NEW Range Rover, then you can’t afford an old one !

If the rest is pristine I'd be very inclined to fix it. The turbo's are the major issue with these and the rest is just pot luck and no different to any other car of a similar age. I've no idea what your budget is, what you paid for it or what you have spent so far but scrapping it could be more expensive than fixing it in the long run. It's worth 'maybe' £2k scrap if you are lucky but even after spending £4.5k on new turbo's and selling it straight away you may well get more than £2k back in your pocket. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

£4K for turbo replacement??
I am assuming they have not exploded into the engine so it is literally replacing the turbos?
Not sure where they get off quoting that kind of money Shocked
motor out change turbo's motor back in any shop worth there salt should be able to do that and a specialist shop in double quick time.
now i am not sure but i think this is for the pair as it does not ask you to select but £600 for a pair (Even if £600 each i think thats good) https://turbodiesel.cc/shop/turbochargers/...ukEALw_wcB

Price will depend on whether quoting for new LR turbos, Orem or rebuilt. Would be worthwhile asking what they are proposing. Then need to decide what you would like fitted. 2012 tdv8 Westminster arrived Jan 19 gone Dec 23

"Not sure where they get off quoting that kind of money Shocked"
Doesn't sound too daft to me.
I've done the "easy" side on one of these and I think 2 days for 1 man is a bit optimistic to complete both. I've got nothing against the reconditioned parts as a DIY proposition where you aren't paying for labour but I doubt any professionals would consider anything less than OEM parts on such a labour intensive task - who pays for the labour if there is a warranty issue?
So £1200 x 2 for OEM parts, £200 for new oil feed pipes, £200 for new oil/filters etc. then 16? hours at £50? an hour makes £3600 then VAT?
Added to the fact that most decent workshops appear to have more than enough work at the moment then I think repair looks like a great DIY prospect but it's never going to be a cheap professional rebuild.
