2012 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 V8 Santorini Black

My L322 Project

As I have documented this on FB, I thought I could transfer it over to here and maybe someone can make use of the inspiration.

I purchased an MY2011 4.4 TDV8 with 139k on the clock and service history to 130k, I knew the car needed some bits done to it and I bought it with this expectation.

When I got the car home I went over it quickly to see what needed doing at first glance.
This is what I found:

The tailgate had a rusty lid on the edge with some bubbling paint and the check straps were no longer of any use.
Tailgate struts were tired
Battery low warning
Keys were coming apart
Clonking from front suspension
Bonnet struts were tired
Steps are heavily corroded
Car needed a good cleaning[/list]

So I set to work and got the battery on charge

Next day I got a load of part numbers identified and ordered a load of new bits before taking some pictures of the tailgate corrosion

And the straps which had rotted away into oblivion

I checked the voltage on the battery which looked ok but the capacity was not as high as it should have been so I went and got a new Duracell 019 AGM battery and got that fitted

Next it was time for a good cleaning, I didn't get many pics of the actual cleaning process but I did get one of the airway steaming to remove any pathogens or odours hanging about in there.

She's not come out too bad!

Next day and I popped to LR parts to get some key shells to replace the manky old keys.

Following a tutorial on YT it was pretty easy to convert the old key to a nice new one, I also gave the metal parts a good scrubbing with a nailbrush and going over with a bit of brasso wadding

Job completed - two nice new looking keys. I also replaced the batteries while I was in there.

My new straps arrived later that day so I set about replacing them. The old bolts had to go too.

Unfortunately the new straps (from Amazon) only came with normal bolts but there is a damper on my lower tailgate that is attached by a ball head bolt which absolutely could not be re-used.

Luckily I had an M8 bolt with a ball head from a previous project to fit a gas strut to my Shogun which I was able to use, result.

Next job was to replace the brake fluid as it looked a little dark for my liking and I always intended to replace all of the fluids anyway as I always do this as matter of course on a second hand car.

I didn't take many pics of the brake fluid being changed but I did get one of the old fluid [/size]

Two litres of Castrol's finest through the old girl and I was starting t feel a bit better about the state of her.

Later on in the evening I took out the seat heater filters, they're expensive to replace and they seem to be made from nylon so I decided to vacuum and then wash them instead. It's a simple job to remove them, they're just under the front of the seat and it's a twist and they drop out.

Had a nice delivery the next day so you can imagine what is coming next.

The gas struts were nice and easy to change so I did them first, all of them have been done. Even the small lower tailgate damper - which I bought separately from LR

Next I'll be doing the front suspension arms Christian.

Today I addressed the knocking from the front suspension, the previous owner changed the drop links as that was the cheapest and easiest thing to change, but that did not cure it.

The bushes didn't look knackered but when I got a lever bar in there and started moving them, they were all like jelly and well past their best

This balljoint (both of them in fact) took an absolute hammering to get it out, the state of my cold chisel afterwards was toast. Plus I hit my hand with the club hammer twice. This is not a job for the faint hearted.
I couldn't get a photo of the other balljoint as it ended up grenading after repeated blows from the cold chisel and clubhammer

Gave the hubs a wire brushing and covering in hammerite whilst I was in there

Nice new oil pan and underneath is 8 litres of Lifeguard 8 gearbox oil

the oil pans side by side, notice the changes in magnet location and the size of the in built filter which is larger on the new oil pan

The magnets had a reasonable amount of swarf on them

Here's the valve block at the bottom of the gearbox with the pan removed

Left a note of when the oil was changed, I probably should have written it in paint pen upon reflection.

Both the diff drain plugs which were also done while I was under the car.

Wheelnuts

Wheelnuts. They're not the greatest design. They seem to be a normal high tensile steel covered by a chromed steel jacket. I think the core must corrode over time and that causes the chromed jacket to swell and then getting your 22mm socket over is next to impossible.

I had to remove some of the wheelnuts with a 23mm socket and one I had to hammer a socket onto. Bit of a nightmare so I ordered a whole new set.

Front Brakes

Front brakes next.

Array of tools needed to get the brake pins out was quite significant.

The pad retention pins were very much stuck and drifting them out did not work. I had to cut them and hammer the bits out.

I know red isn't to some people's taste but I really like them and the wheels are pretty closed off so there are not hue gaps to see them through, I think they still look quite discreet but also if you look close enough you can see they are huge brembo brakes behind there Christian.

Powered Steering Fluid Replacement

I drew some of the PAS fluid out to have a look at it and it looked very different to the new fluid. I thought it was time to protect the PAS components and get it changed.

I used Smith & Allen cold climate fluid

Rather than use the procedure that the manual states by using the engine to pump out the fluid, I used a vacuum extractor which seemed to work really well.

I put the system under vacuum pressure and ensured the reservoir was kept topped up until I had put 3 litres through, making sure all the old fluid was out.
