pull out the BMC connector on the negative terminal and check, this disables the smart charging function. If it charges @13.5 volts then further investigation is required else alternator SOLD | Tuned MY 2011.5 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 TDV8 Orkney Grey | e-diff | ACC New Toy: Unimog U1550L/37 New : G350D |

Yup I believe you are right!!! I had a quick look at the where the alternator is located …. looks like a mega ball ache to get to !!! I assume the fan etc all has to come out as I don’t see any other way to get access!!! I’ll have a look at the wiki to see the Manual ! Thanks so much for the help guys !! On a side note which way does the fan nut undo ? On uk car does it undo towards the passenger side or drivers side ? |

HI, worth checking that the one way clutch inside the alternator pulley hasn't failed. THe alternator will not charge very well if it is coasting. I had this happen on a non-charging wife's Polo once. |

IIRC the pulley is a fixed version. A son shoe-horned a new 4.4 TDV8 alternator to his 3.0 TDV6 D4 and had to fit a free-wheeling pulley for the TDV6. |

Not sure how easy it is to get to live feed from alternator but if not too bad could you not just disconnect, isolate and insulate the wire , recharge the battery and see if any drain? This would definitely confitprm if you have a dead c short in the alternator before you have to remove and change it. 2012 tdv8 Westminster arrived Jan 19 gone Dec 23
