2012 4.4tdv8 electrical problem

Hi guys,

everything absolutely fine went out to drive my car this morning and click click ...

battery complete dead...

charged battery up...

starts perfectly...

check voltage at terminals ---- as suspected not charging !!

checked the belts there intact ! I can only assume its the alternator ??

also I changed the interior courtesy passenger foot lamp and of course I managed to bridge the live and neutral ... now all the courstey lamps are dead , is this a fuse and if so does anyone have the location of the fuse as I can't seem to find it I had a look in the glove box and all the fuses seem intact im hoping I haven't fried a module !! any pointers ??

Does sound like an alternator problem. BUT, anything give you a clue berforehand?

WM and owners manual is in the Wiki and should give you the fuse details. Cheers

Interior lights should be fuse 57 behind glovebox.

I checked fuse 57 and it is perfect !! when I pull it I loose the rear interior light and glove box light !!

absolutely no indication of any charging problem beforehand , hasn't missed beat at all, literally jumped in today and dead, new battery bought last October , have literally had no probs with charging system till now !

pull out the BMC connector on the negative terminal and check, this disables the smart charging function. If it charges @13.5 volts then further investigation is required else alternator SOLD | Tuned MY 2011.5 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 TDV8 Orkney Grey | e-diff | ACC

I pulled the BMC Connector from the negative terminal ,Still no charge at all!!

The interior lights are all working again (I assume I tripped a relay in a module- obviously reset itself when I disconnected the battery)

Yup I believe you are right!!!

I had a quick look at the where the alternator is located …. looks like a mega ball ache to get to !!!

I assume the fan etc all has to come out as I don’t see any other way to get access!!! I’ll have a look at the wiki to see the Manual !

Thanks so much for the help guys !!

On a side note which way does the fan nut undo ? On uk car does it undo towards the passenger side or drivers side ?

HI, worth checking that the one way clutch inside the alternator pulley hasn't failed. THe alternator will not charge very well if it is coasting. I had this happen on a non-charging wife's Polo once.

IIRC the pulley is a fixed version. A son shoe-horned a new 4.4 TDV8 alternator to his 3.0 TDV6 D4 and had to fit a free-wheeling pulley for the TDV6.

Not sure how easy it is to get to live feed from alternator but if not too bad could you not just disconnect, isolate and insulate the wire , recharge the battery and see if any drain? This would definitely confitprm if you have a dead c short in the alternator before you have to remove and change it. 2012 tdv8 Westminster arrived Jan 19 gone Dec 23
